Men’s Basketball Hosts Big 5 Rival Penn Saturday

PHILADELPHIA – Temple (4-3, 1-0 Big 5) completes its three-game homestand with its second straight Philadelphia Big 5 contest on Saturday when the Owls host the Penn Quakers (4 pm/ESPNU/1210 AM WPHT).

Penn (3-7, 0-1), which did not compete during the 2020-21 season due to Covid, enters play on a three-game losing streak with its last lost being to #6 Villanova, 76-51, on Wednesday at the Palestra in its Big 5 opener. The Owls have won three-straight games and defeated Big 5 rival La Salle, 73-57, on Wednesday night.

Temple will be playing its first game without Khalif Battle, the leading scorer in the AAC (21.4 pg) suffered a season-ending injury in the La Salle win.

SCOUTING TEMPLE
> With Khalif Battle out, Damian Dunn is the team's only double-figure scorer (11.1 ppg).  He also leads the team in FT percentage (.833) and is tied for the lead in steals (8).  
> Tai Strickland (9.0 ppg), the team's third leading scorer, missed the La Salle game due to a thigh injury and is questionable for the Penn game. 
> Jeremiah Williams, who has started every game of his career, leads the Owls in assists (4.3 apg/5th AAC) while ranking fourth in scoring (8.1 ppg).
> Jake Forrester, who had season highs in points (12) and rebounds (8) in the La Salle win,  averages 4.9 points and 3.9 rebounds per game while Sage Tolbert III (3.6 ppg/5.1 rpg) rounds out the starters.
> Nick Jourdain (3.3 ppg) leads the team in rebounding (5.6 rpg) and ranks fourth in the AAC in blocks (1.6 bpg) despite averaging just 19.1 mpg off the bench.

SCOUTING PENN
> Penn enters the game having lost three straight games with their last loss coming to #6 Villanova, 71-56, on Wednesday at the Palestra in its Big 5 opener.
> The Quakers have lost five of their last six overall, but the last two have been to nationally-ranked teams (at #13 Arkansas) and another in double overtime to Utah State.
> Sophomore guard Jordan Dingle leads the Quakers in scoring (19.7 ppg) and assists (3.1 apg) while Jonah Charles also averages in double figures at 10.5 ppg.
> Sixth-man Clark Slajchert is third in scoring (9.0 ppg) while Max Martz (7.1 ppg) tops the squad in rebounding (5.4 rpg).
> Penn averages 9.8 threes per game with Charles (30) and Dingle (24) leading the way.

SERIES HISTORY 
> Temple and Penn are meeting for the 75th time, with the Owls holding a 50-24 lead in the all-time series.
> Penn has won the last two meetings, marking the first time the Quakers have defeated the Owls in consecutive seasons since the 2001-02 and 2002-03 campaigns.
> Prior to the 2019-20 season, Temple had won 11 straight with Penn's last win in the series came back on Jan. 24, 2007.
> This will be the second time in 33 seasons that Fran Dunphy will not be on the sidelines for a Temple-Penn game. Dunphy served as an assistant at Penn ('88-89) before taking over as head coach (1989-2006). He then moved to Temple where he served 13 seasons ('06-19). The all-time winningest coach in Philadelphia Big 5 history (580), Dunphy led Temple to 10 postseason appearances, including eight trips to the NCAAs. He guided Penn to 10 Ivy League Championships, nine NCAA Tournaments.

> Temple is tied with Villanova for the most Big 5 titles with each having 27. The Owls' 142 Big 5 wins ranks second to Villanova (155).
> Hall of Fame coach John Chaney won 15 titles in his 24 years at Temple, the most by any Big 5 coach.
> Temple coach Aaron McKie was a three-time First Team all-Big 5 selection as well as the 1993 Big 5 Most Valuable Player.
> Temple assistant to the head coach Mark Macon was the 1991 Big 5 MVP and is the all-time leading scorer in Big 5 games (347 points).
