AAC Announces 2021 Football Schedule
2.18.21 | Football
PHILADELPHIA – The American Athletic Conference announced its 2021 football schedule today completing Temple's slate of 12 games for the 2021 season.
After a season and schedule wrecked by a global pandemic, Temple looks to get back to its winning ways in 2021. Third-year head coach Rod Carey, who led Temple to an 8-5 record and a berth in the Military Bowl in 2019, expects to rebound from a disappointing season. Prior to last year, Temple had a streak of five straight bowl appearances and was bowl eligible for six consecutive seasons and nine of the previous 11.
"I'm really excited about the schedule we have right in front of us with lifting and spring ball," said Carey. "I really value the time we spend together as a team, more so now than ever. I'm going to take this one step at a time but this adds something for us - our team, our fans, and our university - to look forward to as we all still struggle with the pandemic."
The non-conference schedule will begin with a trip up the New Jersey Turnpike to face Rutgers in the season opener on Sept. 4. The Owls will also travel to Akron (Sept. 11) before coming home for three straight games at Lincoln Financial Field – vs. Boston College (Sept. 18), Wagner (Sept. 25) and then their first conference game of the season vs. Memphis (Oct. 2). Temple then travels to Cincinnati to face the defending AAC Champions in a nationally televised ESPN Friday night game (Oct. 8) before a mid-season bye week.
The Owls come off the bye week alternating home-and-away AAC contests over the remaining six weeks of the regular season. The first stop will be USF (Oct. 23) to play the Bulls at Raymond James Stadium, site of last week's Super Bowl LV. Home games against UCF (Oct. 30), Houston (Nov. 13), and Navy (Nov. 27) are separated by trips to East Carolina Carolina (Thursday night contest on Nov. 4 – this game potentially may be moved to Sat. Nov. 6) and Tulsa (Nov. 20).
For the seventh straight year, the American Athletic Conference will hold a Conference Championship Game which is set for Saturday, Dec. 4.
