Volleyball Upended by Veteran Towson Team

2.27.21 | Women's Volleyball

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple volleyball team won the first set but ultimately fell 3-1 at the hands of a veteran Towson team on Saturday afternoon at McGonigle Hall. The Tigers, the defending CAA Champions, who advanced to the NCAA second round last year, won with set scores of 20-25, 25-20, 25-15, 25-18, to move to 2-0 on the season. Temple falls to 6-4.

How it Happened
> Temple came out strong, using aggressive serving and solid passing to take the first set, 25-20.
> Towson answered in the second set, winning the tight frame, 25-20, to tie the match at 1-1.
> The Tigers were on fire in the third, hitting .344 to Temple's .000 to go up, 2-1.
> The Owls rebounded in the fourth to hit .406, but Towson hit an impressive .607 to take the set and match.
> Towson finished with a .279 attack, while Temple was held to .178.

Individual Highlights
> Sophomore Kayla Spells has an outstanding match, tallying 12 kills without an error, hitting .571 with three blocks.
> Junior Gem Grimshaw finsihed with 14 kills and 13 digs for another double-double.
> Junior Tyler Lindgren had 31 assists with nine digs.
> Freshman tallied five kills on just eight swings to hit .500.
> Freshman Falanika Danielson led the Owls with 16 digs on the day.

Set One: Temple 25, Towson 20
> Towson led early in the first set, going up 8-4. 
> Temple turned the tides with a 6-2 run to go up 12-10. 
> The Tigers regained the lead before the teams knotted things at 16-16.
> From there, Temple surged, as Spells tallied three kills down the stretch to seal the 25-20 win for the Owls.

Set Two: Towson 25, Temple 20 
> Temple broke an early 5-5 tie with three straight winners to go up 8-5.
> The Owls led 11-9 before a 5-0 run from the Tigers put Towson up 14-11.
> Temple got one back, but the Towson surge continued, as the visitors pushed their advantage to eight points.
> Towson closed out the set by holding off a late run by Temple, tying the match with a 25-20 score.

Set Three: Towson 25, Temple 15 
> A tight match to start saw Temple trail by just two at 9-7.
> Towson then rattled off an 8-1 run to go up 17-8.
> Temple was unable to control strong serving and tight net play by the Tigers as they took the advantage in the match with a 25-15 win.

Set Four: Towson 25, Temple 18
> The fourth set stayed tight early on with the Tigers leading by one, 6-5.
> Towson then used a 6-1 run to go up 12-6.
> Temple would get at closed as four points at 18-14, but Towson finished out the 25-18 win to seal the match at 3-1.

Up Next
> Temple is back in action on March 7, hosting UConn at 1:00 p.m. in GYM 145 at McGonigle Hall. The match will not be televised.
