Bolukbasi, Grimshaw Lead Temple to Sweep of Coppin State

PHILADELPHIA -- Temple juniors Miray Bolukbasi and Gem Grimshaw combined for 35 kills to lead the Owls' volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep over visiting Coppin State on Friday night. The Cherry and White won three tight sets, 25-22, 26-24, and 25-19 to move to 3-0 on the season. Coppin State falls to 1-1 with the loss.
How It Happened
> Temple trailed most of the first set, but a late run gave the Owls the momentum.
> The Owls needed extra points to take the second set, before winning by a comfortable margin in the third to complete the sweep.
> Temple hit .256 for the match, holding the Eagles to .217.
> The Owls had a slight edge in digs 58-54, but Coppin State won the battle at the net with four blocks to Temple's three.
Individual Highlights
> Grimshaw and Bolukbasi provided the bulk of Temple's offense on the night, as Grimshaw netted a season-best 17 kills, hitting .433 with eight digs. Bolukbasi continued her early hot streak with a match-best 18 kills, hitting an efficient .375.
> Another junior, Tyler Lindgren, captained the offense, as the setter dished out 33 assists, adding 13 digs for her second double-double of the season.
> Freshman Falanika Danielson led all players with 21 digs, adding nine assists to her stat line.
> Junior Xeryah Salanoa tallied 10 digs, freshman Taylor Davenport had five kills and a pair of blocks, and junior Peyton Boyd finished with four kills an dtwo blocks.
Set One: Temple 25, Coppin State 22
> Coppin State jumped out to a 6-1 lead and held an advantage most of the match.Â
> Trailing 15-10, the Owls rallied with Salanoa on the service line, cutting the lead to just one point.
> The Eagles still held an advantage, as late as 19-17, before Temple made its comeback.
> The Owls ended the set on an 8-3 run to go up 1-0 in the match.
Set Two: Temple 26, Coppin State 24
> A 6-2 start to the second second by Temple was nearly erased with a a 7-3 surge from the Eagles.
> The Owls then pushed the advantage to 17-11 on the arms of Bolukbasi and Grimshaw, before another Coppin State run.
> The visitors closed the gap and came all the way back to tie the set at 23-23.
> Temple held firm, however, finishing the set with back-to-back Grimshaw points to go up 2-0.
Set Three: Temple 25, Coppin State 19
> Temple hit .297 in the third set to finish out the victory.
> Tied 4-4, the Owls created some separation with a 6-2 run to go up 10-6.
> Temple would let Coppin State get no closer the rest of the way, closing out the set 25-19.Â
