Women's Soccer Drops a Tough Fight to SMU, 3-1

3.17.21 | Women's Soccer

PHILADELPHIA – A second-half rally from the Owls wasn't enough as the team fell to the SMU Mustangs, 3-1, Wednesday night at Temple Sports Complex.

How It Happened
> Off a dominant showing versus Cincinnati, AAC Rookie of the Week Lexy Endres struck first for the Owls in the 5th minute with a shot that was far right.
> Kamryn Stablein produced a beautiful save in the 8th minute, but the Mustangs found the rebound and took the early lead with a goal by Jewel Boland.
> Temple looked to even the score with shots by Arryana Daniels and later, Hailey Gutowski but neither would find the net.
> SMU extended its lead in the 31st minute with Wayny Balata picking up her first goal, assisted by Jewel Boland.
> While the Mustangs looked to be in control of the game, the Owls kept the pressure coming in the final minutes of the first half despite being unable to produce their first goal of the game.
> Jewel Boland continued to show her dominance, picking up her second goal of the game in the 47th minute.
> Julia Dolan kicked off the Owls' rally in the second half with a shot saved by Samanatha Estrada in the 56th minute.
> Daniels looked to close the Mustangs' lead in the 63rd minute, but her shot was wide left.
> Dolan tried to put the Owls on the board again in the 70th minute, but was met with another save by Estrada.
> Endres and Emily Kavanaugh took their own shots at closing the gap, but both would just miss.
> SMU looked to extend its lead with a flurry of shots in the 83rd minute right in front of the goal, but Kamryn Stablein bounced back and came up with two incredible saves.
> The Owls drew Estrada out of the net in the 84th minute, capitalizing on the goal-scoring opportunity and giving Niara Sapp her first goal of the season.
> Temple looked to continue its momentum in the final minutes of the game, with Marissa DiGenova on the hunt for the team's second goal, but the comeback was met with the second half horn.
