Injury Woes Continue as Men’s Soccer Loses 4-0 to UCF

3.20.21 | Men's Soccer

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Temple men's soccer team (2-4-1, 2-4-1 AAC) fell to UCF (4-3, 4-3 AAC) 4-0 Saturday night in its first road loss of the season. For the second game in a row, the Owls were plagued by early injuries. Only 25 minutes into the match starting midfielder Santiago Majewski was removed from the action due to injury, defender Pierre Cayet was also injured, but would later return. The four goals that were allowed are the most by the Owls all season.

How it Happened
> UCF came out fast, the Owls defense forced the first shot of the match wide of the cage.
> Knights' forward Hattabiou Barry found the back of the net in the 17th minute for the first goal of the game.
> In the 26th minute Majewski was injured for the second consecutive match. Only moments later Cayet was injured due to a collision. He soon returned to the field.
 > Soon after the start of the second half, the Knights extended their lead off of a penalty kick goal by Yoni Sorokin.
> Less than two minutes later UCF scored again, this time from Anderson Rosa.
> The Owls produced a pair of strong shot attempts from Brandon Johnson and Mike Eijgendaal
> In the 65th minute defender Esteban Suarez fired a pair of quality shots, the first was saved by keeper Yannick Oettl. The second was blocked by a UCF defender.
> Midfielder Fabian Grant looked to cut into the deficit, but his attempt was saved.
> Paul Frendach fired one from deep in the 85th minute, but was met with another save from Oettl.
> Barry scored his second of the night with just 1:56 left on the clock to make the final score 4-0.

Game Notes
> Neither keeper made a save in the first half. This is the first time this has occurred in any half this season.
> After not shooting the ball all season, Johnson has attempted one shot in both of the last two games.
> Six yellow cards were issued in this match, the second-highest total this season. Four on Temple and two on UCF.

From the Coach
> "We've got three games to get our footing and get it right again before we play again on Saturday. It's one game, I think we'll feel good about our matchups going forward. We'll dust ourselves off, we'll figure out where we can improve and prepare for Memphis next week." -- head coach Brian Rowland.

Up Next
> The Owls end their three-game road trip with a visit to Memphis on Saturday, Mar. 27. The 7 PM match will be streamed on ESPN+.
