Fencing Concludes Day 1 at NCAA Championships

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - In the first day at the NCAA Championships, two members of the Temple fencing team sit in the top seven of their respective weapons after three rounds of competition. The Owls have two more rounds of round-robin play, with the top four finishers in each weapon moving on the semifinals and finals.
In epee, Margherita Calderaro sits tied for fourth after winning 11 bouts while Sarah Park is in 16th place with six wins. Freshman Elizabeth Novoseltseva is tied for 12th with six wins in foil. Saberist Eva Hinds is in seventh-place with 10 wins while Zoe Turner is in 19th-place with four wins.
"With this being everyone's first time at the NCAA's, we had to overcome some nerves and channel our excitement into focus," head coach Dr. Nikki Franke said. "As the day went on, they relaxed more and were able to execute better. Now, we're looking forward to day two and getting off to a good start."Â
Rounds 4 and 5 are set for tomorrow morning, with all three weapons beginning at 9 a.m.
