Record-Breaking Four Owls Claim AAC Weekly Awards

4.5.21 | Men's Soccer

IRVING, Texas- After an impressive 4-1 win over No. 23 Tulsa Friday night, forward Sean Karani, goalkeeper Eoin Gawronski, forward Nigel Griffith, and defender Mickael Borger have been honored by the American Athletic Conference. Karani has earned AAC Co-Offensive Player of the Week, Gawronski took AAC Goalkeeper of the Week, Griffith claimed AAC Rookie of the Week, and Borger was named to the AAC Weekly Honor Roll for their efforts in the victory. The four Owls honored break the previous record of three, set multiple times.

Karani was awarded Co-Offensive Player of the Week for his third time being honored by the conference, last season he was named to the AAC honor roll twice. The sophomore scored the opening goal of the match in one of the finest goals of the season. Karani beat two defenders and fired a rocket that found the back right corner of the net for his first score of the year. The second goal saw the Kansas native use excellent positioning to get open for a pass from freshman Nigel Griffith and tap in his second goal of the year. Karani's brace is the second on the year for any Temple player.

Gawronski has wowed since taking over the keeper spot midseason. In his four games starting, this marks his second goalkeeper of the week award and third weekly award from the conference. The redshirt freshman made four saves on the day, including a fantastic set of back-to-back saves less than 40 seconds apart in the second half to prevent Tulsa from creeping back into the match. Gawronski was on track for his third shutout of the year before a penalty kick goal got the Golden Hurricane on the board.

Griffith made plenty of noise in his collegiate start. The true freshman forward had a hand in each of Temple's four goals, with one goal and three assists on the night. On Karani's first goal Griffith set up the forward for his drive to the goal. He scored the second himself, settling a ball and punching it in. On the third Griffith used his speed to force the Tulsa backline to collapse on him as he approached the right side of the goal. The Stroudsburg native was able to find a trailing Campbell all alone in front of the net. Finally, the freshman beat the entire Tulsa defense, drawing the keeper out of position and finding Karani in front of the net. The three assists fell just shy of tying the Temple record of four in a single match.

Mickael Borger helped lead the Owls backline to one of their best performances of the season against the powerful Tulsa offense. Borger consistently made strong plays to limit the chances of the Golden Hurricane attack, particularly in the first half where, in addition to only allowing one Tulsa shot, the Frenchman made a gorgeous assist on the second Owl goal. The strong play continued into the second, where Tulsa struggled to find good chances and only got on the board thanks to a penalty kick.

Temple will be back in action tomorrow as they travel to face the Memphis Tigers. The 1 pm match will not be streamed. Fans can follow along on Twitter @Temple_Msoc and Statbroadcast.
