PHILADELPHIA – Records are made to be broken and that is what Temple University student-athletes continue to do on a regular basis in the classroom.  Eleven of Temple's 19 varsity sports tied or set new program records for cumulative grade point average following the completion of the spring semester while all 19 programs earned a semester grade point average above a 3.00 for just the second time in department history.

Overall, Temple student-athletes earned a 3.41 cumulative grade point average, which is the highest department GPA outside of last spring (2020), when students were able to credit/no credit all of their courses due to the sudden exceptional circumstances of the pandemic.

It marks the sixth straight semester Temple student-athletes have earned over a 3.20 combined GPA.  It is also the 19th straight semester grade point average above a 3.00.   It is also the second-highest percentage (79.4%) of student-athletes earning a semester GPA of 3.0 or above and the 20th consecutive semester with over 50 percent achieving this mark.

A 4.0 semester GPA was earned by 70 Temple student-athletes, marking the second highest number in school history to achieve perfection for a semester.

"Our amazing student-athletes' achievements in the classroom continue to be a source of great pride for not only athletics, but the entire University," said Temple University Acting Director of Athletics Fran Dunphy. "This record-breaking success is a product of the tremendous support system that is in place with our coaches and dedicated academic support staff led by Justin Miller. This combined effort has led to our phenomenal academic success here at Temple, and the records set over the past decade are the direct result of this teamwork."

For only the second time in Temple athletics history, all 19 varsity sports posted a combined semester GPA above a 3.00 led by men's cross country and women's gymnastics, which earned combined GPAs of 3.85 and 3.69, respectively.  All 19 Temple teams either matched or improved their team's GPA from the Fall 2019 semester with women's basketball (+0.63), and men's tennis (+0.28) leading the way.

It was also the third consecutive semester all Temple teams have earned a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better with men's cross country (3.77) and women's cross country (3.70) again topping the list.
As stated, 11 teams earned program record cumulative GPAs through the Spring 2021 semester - women's basketball, men's cross country, men's crew, women's fencing, football, women's gymnastics, women's lacrosse, women's rowing, women's soccer, and women's indoor and outdoor track.
