Lacrosse Ranked #19 in Final IWLCA Poll
6.1.21 | Women's Lacrosse
PHILADELPHIA - The Temple lacrosse team is finishing the 2021 season with a No. 19 ranking in the IWLCA Poll. The Owls advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1998, falling to eventual NCAA Champion Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Mass. last month.
Finishing the historic season with a 13-6 (7-3 AAC) record, the Owls earned a No. 3 seed in the American Conference Tournament and were the tournament runner-ups. The team earned an at-large NCAA Tournament bid for the first time since 1998, when they were an independent, after an outstanding regular season performance. Temple's only losses came to teams with a top 15 RPI Ranking.Â
The Cherry and White put five players on the All-Conference Team, with Courtney Taylor, Meghan Hoffman, Belle Mastropietro, and Bridget Whitaker being named First-Team All-AAC while Kara Nakrasius was named Second-Team All-AAC. Whitaker, Mastropietro, Charessa Crosse, and Katie Shallow were named to the All-Tournament Team for their efforts against Vanderbilt and Florida in the conference tournament.
Two Owls earned IWLCAÂ Mid-Atlantic All-Region honors, with Taylor being named to the First Team while Whitaker was named to the Second Team. Taylor was also named and Inside Lacrosse Media All-American Honorable Mention and was invited to the 2021 US Women's Lacrosse National Team tryouts.
Temple finished the season ninth in the nation in caused turnovers per game (10.42) and was eighth in draw control percentage (.589).
Hoffman set the program record in single-season assists (45) while Whitaker's 86 draw controls this season set Temple's single-season record. Taylor was one ground ball (67) and was one caused turnover (42) away from setting the single-season record in both categories.
The team saw nine Owls graduate and will welcome five newcomers to the squad in the offseason.
