7.7.21 | Men's Crew, Women's Lacrosse, Women's Track and Field

PHILADELPHIA - Three Temple student-athletes were named the 2020-21 American Athletic Conference Scholar Athletes of the Year for their respective sports, as announced by the league office Wednesday morning. Alanna Lally (Women's Indoor Track and Field), Lasse Grimmer (Men's At-Large) and Courtney Taylor (Women's Lacrosse) were each honored for their academic and athletic achievements.

The Scholar-Athlete of the Year Awards are given to a student-athlete in each American Athletic Conference-sponsored sport based on academic credentials and athletic accolades and performances. To be eligible, student-athletes must have attained a minimum of senior academic standing. The final selections are made by the conference's Faculty Athletic Representatives. Each Scholar-Athlete of the Year recipient receives a $2,000 postgraduate scholarship.

Alanna Lally is the Temple 800m indoor record holder with her mark of 2:06.35. The Galway, Ireland native opened the 2021 indoor season with a first-place finish in the 800m at the #HTownSpeedCity Series. At the Camel City Invite, Lally had the best indoor performance of the season, crossing the finish line at 2:05.88 for third-place. She was the top collegian in the event as she finished behind two professional runners. Lally's time placed her at 12th nationally. Off the track, the Athletic Training major recorded a 4.0 GPA.

Lasse Grimmer stroked the Owls' varsity eight boat to an unprecedented season in 2021. Temple swept the competition, winning the 2021 Dad Vail Regatta, and remaining undefeated until the National Championships. Grimmer and his crew took home the hardware at every major Philly event during the spring, winning the Murphy Cup, the Kerr Cup, and the Bergen Cup. In the classroom, the Adult & Organizational Development major carries a 3.96 GPA.

Courtney Taylor was named First-Team All-Region and earned Third Team Media All-American honors from the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA). The senior has had one of the best seasons in recent Temple lacrosse history and was invited to the 2021 USA Women's Lacrosse National Team tryouts next month. Taylor led the nation in ground ball pickups (67) and finished second in caused turnovers (42). She also led all defenders in Lacrosse Reference's Expected Goals Allowed (ELO) stat for nearly the entire season by a wide margin. The Chalfont, Pa. native helped lead Temple to its first NCAA tournament berth since 2008 and first tournament win since 1998. Taylor is the first Owl to earn All-American honors since Whitney Richards was named to the All-American Third-Team in 2008. A Supply Chain Management major, Taylor registered a 3.7 GPA.
