Temple Athletics Reorganizes Broadcast Teams

8.11.21 | Football, General, Men's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA — Harry Donahue, Temple University's longtime radio play-by-play voice for football and men's basketball, will be moving over to television to handle the Owls' play-by-play on ESPN+ while Kevin Copp, who oversees the department's video production, will switch from calling games on television to take over as the new radio play-by-play voice.   The change will take effect for the start of the 2021-22 season.

"This is the perfect stage in my career to make this transition," said Donahue.  "I will just be doing home basketball games so it will not involve traveling.  I will miss being around the teams on road trips, but this is a great opportunity for me personally.  It is also great for Kevin as well and as he has done a tremendous job calling Temple sports."

"Harry is not only Temple's voice, but one of the most respected broadcasters in the Philadelphia area," said Acting Director of Athletics Fran Dunphy. "We have been fortunate to have him call Temple games on the radio for over two decades and am happy he will continue to serve our fans on the ESPN+ side."

One of the most recognizable voices in the Delaware Valley, Donahue, who was inducted into the Temple Basketball Ring of Honor in 2020, worked as the morning news and sports anchor at KYW Newsradio 1060 for 35 years before retiring from the 50,000-watt station in 2014.

He started working with Temple Athletics in 1984, broadcasting some Temple Football games on the radio for a few years.  In 1987, his involvement with the Temple men's basketball program started as he called play-by-play for a package of games for the #1 ranked Owls on Channel 17.    He would return as the play-by-play voice of Temple Football in 1993 and later take over play-by-play duties for the Owls Men's Basketball program in 2002.

Copp, who also serves as Temple's Associate Athletics Director for Video Production, has been the primary play-by-play voice for Temple's Olympic Sports broadcasts since 2015. In the 2020-21 season, these broadcasts moved to ESPN+ as part of the American Athletic Conference's media rights agreement with ESPN. He will continue in this role except for men's basketball and football games, which the American Athletic Conference produces.

"Growing up in the Philadelphia area, Harry has been one of the iconic voices of my lifetime, and it is truly an overwhelming honor to follow in his footsteps as the voice of Temple football and men's basketball," said Copp. "Getting to work alongside Paul Palmer and John Baum to share great moments from these two storied programs with the Temple fan base is a dream come true."

Palmer, who has served as the color commentator of football games on the radio, and Baum, who is the color analyst for men's basketball, will continue in their roles this season.  Marc Jackson, who was the color analyst on ESPN+ men's basketball games in 2020-21, will also be back for a second year.
