8.28.21 | Women's Volleyball
PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple volleyball team played tough in a 3-0 loss to visiting Stanford on Saturday night in the final match of the 2021 Temple Invitational. The #21 ranked Cardinal took the three-set match 25-13, 25-20, 25-22, holding off a late rally from the Owls to move to 2-0 on the season. Temple dips to 1-2 on the year.
How It Happened
> Temple got off to a slow start adjusting to the high-powered Stanford offense, as the Cardinal hit .515 and cruised to a 25-13 set one win.
> The Owls battled back to keep the second set close, but ultimately fell 25-20.
> Though the third set also went to the Cardinal, Temple used a late rally to come within two points in the final stretch, before Stanford finished it out, 25-22.
> The Cardinal hit .425 for the match, but recorded only six blocks, as Temple's offense was well placed.
> Temple recorded three aces in the match, with just one error, while allowing only one Stanford ace on the evening.

> "We know it's a process, we have 10 underclassmen, that's a majority of our team. So we have to be patient. We had some things that we didn't do well yesterday that we wanted to do better today. One was serving, the other was serve-receive to attack, and I think we did both well today, so I'm happy with that progress."
> "We played well on defense considering the offensive power that Stanford has. Our transition work on defense was pretty good, we got some good touches at the block that really helped us to pick up those balls and re-attack."
> "Our offensive players did a great job. Miray did exactly what we wanted her to do, she changed up the tempo, she had different shots, attacked the areas we told her to attack, so I was very pleased with that."
> "I thought Gem had a really good overall game, a really strong performance similar to the conference semifinals and finals from this spring. So I'm really happy to see how they responded from yesterday."
Individual Highlights
> Gem Grimshaw led the Owls' offense with 13 kills on just one error, hitting .462. She also added eight digs.
> Miray Bolukbasi finished with 12 kills, hitting .385, with five digs.
> Patrycja Zielinska dished out 24 assists on the night, while Falanika Danielson led all players with 17 digs.
Up Next:
> Temple will host the Hilton Philadelphia at Penn's Landing Cherry & White Challenge next weekend, playing Iona, Maryland and LIU.
> The Owls take on Iona at 10:30 am on Friday, followed by a 6:00 p.m. match against Maryland. The tournament wraps up on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. with the Owls taking on LIU.
