Women’s Soccer Topples Drexel, 3-0
9.19.21 | Women's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA – Temple women's soccer (2-3-3, 0-1-0 AAC) topped Drexel (4-3-1, 0-0-0 CAA) in a 3-0 shutout on Sunday afternoon at the Temple Sports Complex. An early Temple advantage spearheaded by Emily Kavanaugh laid the groundwork for the Owls, resulting in their first home win of the season.
How it Happened
- Just 16 minutes into play, Hailey Gutowski made her first run of the afternoon down the left wing, beating her defender to get her feet free and send a cross into the box. Forward Emily Kavanaugh was there to receive, knocking the ball into the back of the net for the go-ahead goal.
- Gutowksi kept the momentum going, using her speed on the wing again just one minute later. As she approached the box, the junior forward sent a shot towards towards the net, looking to slip one in right under the crossbar. Goalkeeper Miyuki Schoyen was able to get a tip on it, but it was not enough as it bounced in for the 2-0 lead.
- The Dragons attempted to answer back with five unanswered shots to close out the first half, but goalkeeper Kamryn Stablein held her ground to keep the Dragons scoreless.
- After a back-and-forth battle in the second half, the Owls lengthened the advantage even further in the 71st minute. Carly Steinberg dribbled around her defender, dishing it off to Lexy Endres who rocketed a shot at cage, dinging off the crossbar. Emily Kavanaugh controlled the ricochet, taking a touch before finishing the ball herself for her second goal of the game and the last and final goal of the match.
- "My philosophy is that doing the right things continuously will yield the right results," Nick Bochette said. "Our team had some difficulty converting on our opportunities early in the season, but Emily and Hailey have continuously put in the work for us. We are really starting to see the fruits of their labor and I have no doubt that that will continue through conference play."
- Head Coach Nick Bochette remains unbeaten by any Philadelphia team, going 3-0-1 against all city opponents since his start at Temple in 2020-2021.
- Emily Kavanaugh is making an impact this year, recording a career high of two goals this match and reaching a season high of eight points on four goals to lead the Owls this season.
The Owls will remain at home to host Cincinnati this Thursday, Sept. 23 for their second conference match of the year. The matchup is set for 7 p.m. at the Temple Sports Complex and will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
