Women’s Tennis Ready for 2022 Campaign

1.18.22 | Women's Tennis

PHILADELPHIA – Despite facing shortened seasons in both 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, head coach Steve Mauro and the Temple women's tennis squad are ready for their 2022 campaign. The Owls are set to open play with a scrimmage at city rival, Penn on Jan. 19, followed by the season opener on Jan. 22 at VCU where they will play ECU at 10 a.m.

The Cherry and White finished the 2021 season with a 9-2 overall record before facing five year-end cancellations, including the cancellation of the AAC tournament. The Owls posted a perfect 5-0 record at home which included two 7-0 sweeps over Binghamton and LaSalle.

The team is led by head coach Steve Mauro who is in his 14th year at the helm of the women's tennis program. The Owls will return three seniors in Stefaniya Surikova, Rine Nozaki and Yining Tian along with four sophomores in Evie Wei, Miu Yabuta, Vineetha Mummadi and Sena Takebe. The Cherry and White will welcome two newcomers to the squad this year, including one first-year, Veronika Kulhava and one transfer, Jamie Wei.

"We want to continue to improve upon last year's success and be competitive within our conference," Mauro said. "We have a great group of returners who I am confident can lead us in the right direction."

The women have already shown success this year, starting of fall play with the Villanova and Drexel Invite before moving into the ITA Regional and Super Regional tournaments. They closed out fall competition at the annual Cissie Leary Invite hosted by nearby Penn.

"The women had a very strong fall season," Mauro said. "We beat some of the top teams in the area and it was a really promising start for us. We still have a lot of work to do, but I am confident the team will continue to show up and perform like they did this fall, and it will lead us to some really great things."

Newcomers Jamie Wei and Veronika Kulhava spearheaded the fall performances, being the only two Owls to represent Temple women's tennis at ITA Super Regionals. After making a run to the quarterfinals at ITA Regionals the prior weekend, Wei and Kulhava fell just short of qualifying but were later selected to compete as lucky losers. The pair won the round of 16 at Super Regionals, advancing to quarterfinals but ultimately dropped to city rival, Penn.

"I'm extremely excited to have Jamie and Veronika," Mauro said. "They are going to be strong players for us this season and they really showed us that this fall. Jamie has really stepped up and shown her leadership and dedication in the short time she has been with us"

The Owls are set to play a 19-match season, hosting eleven matches including a six-match homestand beginning on Feb. 4 and ending on March 3.
