Volleyball Unable to Overcome No. 23 Houston

HOUSTON, Texas - The Temple Owls volleyball team fell to No. 23 Houston on Friday night in straight sets at the Fertitta Center, 18-25, 20-25, 13-25. 


The Owls fall to 8-14 overall and 2-9 in the AAC, while the Cougars improve to 20-2 overall and 11-0 in the AAC. 


HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Houston hit .330 in the match to the Owls' .074.
  • The Cougars were able to side out the Owls 67% of the time on Friday night.
  • Abbie Jackson and Isabel Theut led the Cougars with 10 kills apiece.
  • Redshirt senior Peyton Boyd led the Owls with eight kills in the match.
  • There were 11 ties and six lead changes in the three-set match.


Set 1 (Houston 25, Temple 18)

  • The Owls' Taylor Davenport led both teams to open the set with two kills and kept the score at 9-9.
  • The Cougars broke away from the Cherry and White in part to Abbie Jackson's five kills on 15 swings on just one error in the first set.
  • Houston won set one as they hit .419 with 15 kills and two errors on 31 swings.

 

Set 2 (Houston 25, Temple 20)

  • The second set was competitive for both sides as Temple held Houston to a .200 hitting percentage, forcing them into five errors on 35 attempts.
  • After Houston increased its lead to nine points, 19-10, the Owls cut down the deficit to four points, 22-18. During that span, the Owls had a pair of blocks, including two block assists from sophomore Chelci Banks, service aces from Davenport, and sophomore setter Magdalena Rogalska.
  • It wasn't enough to overcome as the Cougars held off the Owls for the set victory behind three kills apiece from Isabel Theut and Kortlyn Henderson.
  • The Owls' junior Kayla Spells and Boyd also had three kills in the set.

 

Set 3 (Houston 25, Temple 13)

  • Temple came out with the same energy they showed in the second set, going back and forth with the nationally-ranked Cougars, keeping the score tied at 8-8 behind a pair of kills and an ace from Boyd.
  • After the tie, Houston broke away, winning the set on a 17-5 run, hitting .400, and holding the Owls to .000.
  • The Cougars' Henderson, Theut, Jackson, and Temple's Boyd all had a set-high three kills.

The Owls return to action on Sunday, Oct. 30, with an AAC match with the Tulane in New Orleans at 1 p.m. ET. The match will be available on ESPN+
