PHILADELPHIA – On Friday, November 4th, Temple University welcomed Morgan Village Middle School of Camden, N.J. for the first "Temple Experience"; a fun-filled, engaging day that gives area youth the opportunity to learn more about Temple University and what it takes to be a student-athlete and an Owl.  The Temple Experience was formulated from conversations and meetings with surrounding municipalities in Philadelphia and New Jersey to introduce the community, specifically young students, to all that Temple University and Temple Athletics has to offer.

"I want to thank Drs. DaVonti Hayes and Raven Lynch from the School of Social Work, as well as Prince Moody from our staff for making the Temple Experience a reality," said Vice President and Director of Athletics Arthur Johnson.  "It is only fitting for our first Temple Experience has Temple hosting a middle school from Camden, given the outstanding leadership of alumnus and men's basketball great Mayor Victor Carstarphen.  I would also like to thank Camden City Commissioner Al Dyer, Director of Mayor's Division of Constituent Affairs for the city of Camden, Alex Darling, Senior Manager of Engagement and Chief of Communications for the Camden City School District Charae Perry and School Counselor for the Camden City School District Shawn Forbes for all their efforts in making this happen."

Through the collaboration between Temple Athletics and Temple's School of Social Work, 72 students were welcomed to campus for the first Temple Experience. Dr. DaVonti Haynes and Dr. Raven Lynch, both assistant professors in the School of Social Work, were major contributors in the planning, facilitation, and implementation of the day, offering leadership activities and engagement opportunities for the students.

As the students arrived on campus, they were welcomed by Hooter and various athletics staff members, followed by a leadership session and lunch with student-athletes, coaches and department staff. During this time, the students were able to speak with and learn more about what it takes to be a collegiate student-athlete. The day was highlighted by a campus tour which was led by Temple's Black Student Union, giving the students a glimpse of the opportunities of campus life. As the event came to an end, the students received a Temple Athletics swag bag to cap off an incredible day of learning, community engagement and mentorship.
