PHILADELPHIA - The No. 9 Temple fencing team will head to Princeton, N.J. for the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional on Saturday. The Owls will look to qualify as many fencers for the NCAA Championship as possible, with 12 athletes going to Regionals.
Each weapon will be well represented, with Anna Novoseltseva, Elizabeth Novoseltseva, Gretl Merges, and Anastasia Yankovskiy making up the foil squad, Arwen Gormley, Eva Ventura, Alexandra Weinberg, and Emma Pincus to represent the sabre squad, and Ashley Cherry, Naomi Ross, Margherita Calderaro, and Sarah Park to round out the epee squad.
The Owls opened postseason play with an impressive performance at the NWIFA Championships last weekend. Temple earned the team title for the 26th straight year and swept the squad weapons titles for the second straight year. Anna Novoseltseva took home the individual foil title while Emma Pincus earned the individual sabre title.Â
Temple concluded dual play with a 24-14 record, earning nine wins over ranked opponents.Â
The NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional is being hosted by Princeton on March 12. Jadwin Gym will open to the public at 8 a.m. with competition beginning at 9 a.m. Foil and epee will start at 9 a.m. with saber to start at 10 a.m. and an estimated completion time at 5:30 p.m.
The qualification for the NCAA Championship is based on a formula comprising of a 60 percent weight on regional performance and 40 percent on regular-season meets. Regional champions for each weapon automatically advance, with remaining bids going to fencers based on performance and the region they compete in (seven spots are available in each weapon from the Mid-Atlantic/South Region).
The NCAA selections will be announced on March 15. At the NCAA Championships, each weapon field will consist of the top 24 fencers from across the nation. For the regional meet, the 36 fencers in each weapon will compete until 12 remain, and those 12 will battle in a round robin final.
