PHILADELPHIA - The No. 9 Temple fencing team will open postseason play at the NIWFA Championships on March 5, with the Owls looking to earn their 26th straight title at Drew University.
Temple concluded dual play with a 24-14 record, earning nine wins over ranked opponents. The team topped No. 15 Johns Hopkins 20-7 at the Temple Invitational last weekend, going 2-3 overall. Ashley Cherry led the epee squad with a 7-3 mark, while saberist Emma Pincus's 8-4 record led the team. Margherita Calderaro (epee) posted a 3-0 mark against No. 7 Penn State and Naomi Ross (epee) went 3-0 against No. 1 Princeton.
At the last NIWFA Championships, the Cherry and White swept the team title, individual titles, and weapon titles. This marked the first time since 2015 Temple swept the weapon titles and the first time since 2014 the team swept the individual titles. Calderaro is the defending epee champion while Zoe Turner currently holds the sabre title. Pincus and Cassie Navalta (foil) each tied for third in their respective weapons to round out the podium finishers, with three other Owls earning All-NIWFA honors.
