Men’s Tennis Remains Unbeaten at TU Pavilion for Ninth Straight Season
4.13.22 | Men's Tennis
PHILADELPHIA – After downing St. Johns (14-5), 4-2 on Wednesday afternoon, Temple men's tennis (12-8) kept their historic win streak at the TU Pavilion alive for yet another year, going unbeaten on their home court for nine straight seasons.
Temple, who splits their time at various indoor facilities in the colder months for home matches, returned to the TU Pavilion in early April, with their final competition at the Pavilion coming against St. John's.
The Owls defeated St. John's in an extremely competitive showing, edging out the Red Storm, 4-2. The Cherry and White set themselves up for success from the start, striking early and securing the team doubles point. The Owls won from the No. 2 position, but dropped from the No. 1 spot, leaving the point up to the duo of Gregoire Barety and Hussein El-Tawil. The pair stepped up, closing out doubles play with a 6-4 win to put the Owls on the board. The Red Storm persisted through singles play, but ultimately, an extremely strong showing from Louis Gorregues in the No. 2 spot earned the Owls the fourth point in a three-set back-and-forth battle for the Temple win.
"Today was really something special," head coach Steve Mauro said. "Not only did we play great tennis against a quality team, but we got to do it at the TU Pavilion for our final home match of 2022 and keep our nine-year win streak alive. I really appreciate each and every person who came out to watch and support us today and we are looking to carry our success into Tulsa this weekend."
The Owls winning streak, all which has been under the guidance of Coach Mauro has included 23 straight wins over the course of nine seasons, without seeing a loss since 2013 where they dropped to UMBC, 5-2 on Apr. 13. In those nine seasons, the Owls overall record stands at 126-83 with a .629 average winning percentage.
In addition to going unbeaten at the TU Pavilion for nine years, the Owls have posted three consecutive undefeated home seasons which includes all matches played at the Cherry Hill Racquet Club, Kinetix Tennis Center and Legacy Tennis Center. They posted an 8-0 mark in 2022, a 5-0 mark in 2021 and a 3-0 2020 performance.
The success does not stop at the men's program. Under Mauro's guidance, the Temple women's tennis team has found major success at the TU Pavilion as well, going unbeaten on their home court for five years. This streak spans back to Apr. 15, 2017, where they fell to George Washington University, 4-3.
