Lacrosse Hosts Cincinnati for Alumnae Day

4.7.22 | Women's Lacrosse

PHILADELPHIA- The Temple lacrosse team (8-4) will play its second straight home game this Saturday as the Cincinnati Bearcats (6-7) come to Howarth Field. The Owls will be hosting their first alumnae day since 2019. All alumnae are welcome to register at the link to the right.

LAST TIME OUT
> Temple hammered a Vanderbilt team that was receiving votes in the poll by a score of 20-9. It was the largest margin of victory the Owls had ever had over the Commodores, as well as the most goals Temple has scored in a game since the 2012 season.
> The Owls outscored Vandy 11-3 in the second half.
> Attacker Riley McGowan set a new career-high with seven goals. Quinn Nicolai scored four. Five other players found the back of the net.
> Among those who scored was Charessa Crosse, who scored twice for her first goals since being injured against Florida last season in the AAC title game.
> Belle Mastropietro continues to be a force all over the field. The midfielder was among those who scored twice, she also passed for two assists, picked up four ground balls, and controlled ten draws. Her draw controls are second-most any American Athletic Conference player has won this season behind her own 14 draw control performance against Kennesaw State.

SCOUTING TEMPLE
> Belle Mastropietro has been a force in all phases of the game. The Tewaaraton Watchlist addition currently ranks top ten in the American in seven different statistical categories, including goals, assists, points, and is the conference leader in draw controls. Her 67 controls place her 4th on Temple's all-time single-season list. She was named AAC Midfielder of the Week last week after her performance against Vanderbilt.
> Riley McGowan has emerged as one of the best offensive threats during the American in the last month. Since 3/11 against Delaware, the attacker has scored in every game. This includes a five-goal outburst against UC Davis and seven goals last match against Vanderbilt. She was awarded AAC Weekly Honors for both including AAC Attacker of the Week on Monday. McGowan is third on the team with 23 goals this season.
> Katie Shallow and Maddie Barber are forming the nucleus of an exciting young core for Temple's defense. Shallow ranks third in the American ground balls (28) and first in caused turnovers (23). Barber has picked up 19 ground balls and has caused 11 turnovers, she is also second on the team in draw controls (39). Barber earned a spot on the AAC Weekly Honor Roll for her efforts against the Commodores.

SCOUTING CINCINNATI
> The Bearcats posted a 7-10 record last season and earned an AAC tournament berth where they fell to Florida in the first round. This season, Cincy is 6-7. They lost the conference opener on Monday to No. 10 Florida 19-12.
> The Bearcats are coached by Gina Thomas. This is her tenth season leading Cincinnati. Thomas has a very impressive resume as a player. She was an All-American at Ohio State and a two-time World Champion. During her tenure, the Bearcats are 61-96 but have steadily improved. Thomas is only the second coach in program history.
> The lion's share of the Bearcats' production comes from two players, Kylie Nause and Ava Goeller. Nause has scored 49 goals this season, ranking 5th in the country. Goeller has scored 35 goals and has also passed for 12 assists. Goeller also is second on the team in ground balls (23) draw controls (39).

SERIES HISTORY vs. CINCINNATI
> This is the tenth meeting between these two programs. Temple leads 7-2.
> The two have shared a conference since Cincinnati joined the BIG EAST in 2014.
> Last season, the two sides met twice at Nippert Stadium in Cincinnati. Temple won the first game 16-14 in a comeback thriller. The Owls took the second game as well 10-8. The two wins solidified the Owls as having a perfect 5-0 record on the road last season.
