Elaine Tierney Earns Spot on US Rowing Senior National Team
7.8.22 | Women's Rowing
WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – Elaine Tierney, who was a five-year member of the Temple University women's rowing varsity eight, earned a spot on the US Senior National Team Friday at the USRowing Summer National Championships held on Mercer Lake.
Tierney, competing for the Vesper Boat Club, teamed with Solveig Imsadahl to win the lightweight women's pair, claiming the national championship and a spot on this year's world championships' team. Tierney becomes the first Temple women's rower to compete for the US Senior National Team since Jana Heere earned a spot on the 2007 team competing in the lightweight doubles.
"It was definitely a hard fought and well worked for race," said Tierney. "We knew the other crew was fast and at almost peak speed with their Under 23 world championship in just a few weeks. We kept ourselves internal and focused on our strokes like we do in practice. This helped us take the lead in the first 500m off the start and be in a good position to respond well to the other crew's final sprint.
I am over the moon to be able to make my first senior team just one year out of U23s and return to Račice. My pair partner, Solvieg, and I are ready to get into the harder work and see how much more speed we can produce before September."
A native of West Chester, Pa. (Unionville HS), Tierney, who competed on the US Rowing U23 National Team in 2021, was a five-year member of the Owls' Varsity Eight boat and was a Second Team all-AAC selection in 2022. She was also named the program's 2018 Newcomer of the Year and in 2020 was Temple Women's Rowing Athlete of the Year.
"I am beyond proud of Lanie and excited for her," said Temple women's rowing coach Rebecca Grzybowski. "To earn the opportunity to represent your country on the world stage is a massive accomplishment, and the direct result of intense work, commitment, and resilience. It has been inspiring to support Lanie's growth as she set big goals, and to celebrate her achievements along the way. I can't wait to continue cheering her on at the World Championships!"
