The Philadelphia Sports Writers Association serves the Philadelphia sports community, working to preserve and promote the proud history of the sports, the athletes, coaches, teams, and philanthropists that call this city home, and the impact they have had on the community and beyond. The banquet, which occurs each year in late January, serves the purpose of honoring those who are deserving of recognition for their athleticism, philanthropy, sports coverage, and broadcast.
Dr. Franke will earn the Lifetime Achievement Award after serving the Temple community for 50 years. Franke, who started her career as an Owl in 1972, was at the helm of the nationally recognized Temple fencing program, before retiring in 2022. She is the all-time winningest women's athletic coach at Temple, amassing 898 wins, including the 1992 NCAA Championship. Dr. Franke is one of two coaches to earn the Lifetime Achievement Award this year, alongside Villanova two-time National Champion and Basketball Hall of Fame Coach, Jay Wright.
Mastropietro will be an honored student-athlete at the event, after an illustrious three years on the Temple women's lacrosse team. Mastropietro had a standout season as a junior, earning multiple accolades at both the conference and national level. The senior midfielder was a unanimous First Team All-Conference selection, AAC Midfielder of the Year and Inside Lacrosse Honorable Mention All-American.
Alongside Dr. Franke and Mastropietro will be some of Philadelphia's greats, including Sixers point guard Tyrese Maxey, Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts, and the 2022 Philadelphia Phillies, which will be represented by Manager Rob Thomson and Phillies third baseman Alec Bohm.
