Volleyball Drops Saturday Heartbreaker to Memphis

Temple’s Taylor Davenport earned a career-high 28 kills
MEMPHIS, Tenn.- The Temple Owls' volleyball team fell to 17-13 overall and 7-11 in the American Athletic Conference on Saturday to Memphis Tigers, 25-21, 21-25, 16-25, 25-20, 14-16. Temple senior Taylor Davenport led all hitters in the match with a career-high 28 kills.

While Temple falls to 6-4 in five-set matches this season, the victory improves Memphis to 10-20 overall and 6-12 in the AAC.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Owls outhit the Tigers on the day .263 to .229.
- While Davenport led Temple with 28 kills, teammates Olivia Vance and Avery Luoma chipped in with 10 kills apiece.
- Luoma also had a match-high six blocks, tying a career-high.
- Defensive specialist Nikki Shimao led Temple with 15 digs, which marks a season high for the senior.
- Temple junior setter Patrycja Zielinska earned her second double-double of the season with a match-high 32 assists and a season-high 14 digs. Fellow Owls' setter Lexi Yoza also recorded 20 assists and 11 digs, her fifth double-double of the season.
- Memphis' Clara Bednarek led her team with 15 kills.
SET 1 (TEM 25, MEM 22)
- Davenport came out with the hot hand as she had eight kills with a .389 hitting percentage.
- Down by five points (18-13), Temple went on a 7-0 run with the help of three straight kills by Davenport to end the run.
- The Owls finished out the set with another run of 4-0, getting kills from Davenport and junior Chelci Banks.
SET 2 (TEM 21, MEM 25)
- The Columbia, S.C. native Davenport continued her hot hand with seven more kills in the set, hitting .500.
- Bednarek and Autumn Flynn matched each other to lead the Tigers with five kills while hitting .714.
- The Tigers jumped out to a 7-1 advantage, getting two kills apiece from Tabytha Toelke and Bednarek.
- Just as the Tigers started to pull away, the Owls scored six of seven points to cut the lead to 8-6.
- MU extended its lead back to six points (17-11), but yet again the Owls managed to tie the score at 19-19 with the help of Taylor Davenport's four kills during that run.
SET 3 (TEM 16, MEM 25)
- Just like set two, Memphis ran out to big lead (7-1), including scoring six straight points. Bednarek had three kills during the run while Madison Rice-Locket added a pair.
- Bednarek led all hitters with five kills in the set while hitting .556.
- The Tigers hit .361 in set three while holding the Owls .158.
SET 4 (TEM 25, MEM 20)
- The Owls forced their 10th fifth-set match of the season as they hit .282 in the set.
- Davenport led all hitters with five kills in the fifth.
- The Cherry and White forced Memphis into a timeout, jumping out an 8-4 lead. Four players including Davenport (2), Jaaliyah Evans (1), Banks (1), and Vance all had kills in that span.
- TU put the set out of reach, forcing the Tigers into their second time out as it pushed the lead to 13-6.
SET 5 (TEM 14, MEM 16)
- A pair of services early by Luoma and Davenport gave the Owls a 4-3 advantage early, but the Tigers turned the momentum around, taking a 8-6 advantage into the change of sides. Bednarek led her team with a pair of kills to start the last set.
- The Tigers continued to lead in the final set, 11-9, before the Cherry and White went a 5-1 run to take a 13-12 lead. Davenport got her 26th and 27th kills of the night to push past Memphis.
- A 4-1 run rally by the home team sealed the victory as Elefthria Baxa put the match a way with her only kill of the set.
