Philadelphia Big 5 Announces 2023-24 Hall of Fame Class

PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia Big 5 has announced its next induction class, including recently retired Temple Senior Associate Athletic Director for Strategic Communications, Larry Dougherty. The class is also comprised of four former student-athletes, and two members of the media. The induction ceremony will take place during the Big 5 Classic on Saturday, December 2 at the Wells Fargo Center.
The class also includes former Philadelphia Daily News college basketball writers, Dick Jerardi and Mike Kern, and former student-athletes Dionne Anthon (Penn), DeAndre' Bembry (Saint Joseph's), Tyreek Duren (La Salle), and Fran O'Hanlon (Villanova).
Larry Dougherty
Larry Dougherty spent 20 years at Temple, including the last 12 as Senior Associate Athletic Director for Strategic Communications after serving 15 years in the athletics media relations office at Saint Joseph's….Spent 35 years as the communications professional for Big 5 basketball programs at Temple and Saint Joseph's before retiring in 2023…Served as the president of CoSIDA during 2010-11 and was inducted into the CoSIDA Hall of Fame in 2015…Was the recipient of the ECAC-SIDA's 2011 Irving T. Marsh Award and in 2017 was named the recipient of ECAC-SIDA Pete Nevins Award for Distinguished Service and CoSIDA's Bob Kenworthy Community Service Award….Received the Arch Ward Award by CSC (formerly CoSIDA), awarded who has made outstanding contributions to the field of college athletics communications.
Dick Jerardi
Covered college basketball and horse racing for the Daily News for 33 years…During basketball season, he wrote two columns per week, covered games and wrote features….He has seen college games in more than 150 venues and has covered 25 Final Fours… Covered events as varied as the Summer Olympics, NBA finals, World Series, NFL playoffs and the Rose Bowl…Named 2015 Bob Vetrone Media Award winner from Atlantic 10 Conference…Beat writer for La Salle in the late 1980s and 1990s, and also Saint Joseph's in the 2000s…Was president of the US Basketball Writers Association and was inducted into the USBWA Hall of Fame in 2014.
Mike Kern
Nearly 40 years covering college basketball and golf for the Daily News…Former President of Philadelphia Sports Writers Association…Pennsylvania Sportswriter of the Year in 2003…Spent time as beat writer for Temple and Villanova, along with covering Big 5 basketball, professional golf and college football.
Dionne Anthon (1988-92)
First Team All-Ivy League (1991-92) … Second Team All-Ivy (1990-91) … Second Team All-Big 5 (1990-91, 1991-92) … Academic All-Ivy (1991-92) … 7th all-time at Penn in career points (1,293) … 4th all-time in career free throw percentage (.795) … Her 11 assists in a game rank fifth all-time … Sixth all-time in career assists (294) … 1992 Team MVP … Two-time team captain … Inducted into Penn Athletics Hall of Fame in 2010.
DeAndre' Bembry (2013-16)
Helped Saint Joseph's win two Atlantic 10 Championships, make two NCAA appearances, and finished his career as the 15th leading scorer in school history with 1,590 points…Named the 2016 Player of the Year in both the Atlantic 10 and the Philadelphia Big 5…Two-time First Team All-Big 5 and All-Atlantic 10…Big 5 Rookie of the Year in 2014…Was selected 21st overall by the Atlanta Hawks in the 2016 NBA Draft and spent six seasons in the NBA.
Tyreek Duren (2010-14)
Three-time All-Philadelphia Big 5, including First Team honors twice…Three-time NABC All-District…Two-time Second Team All-Atlantic 10… Helped lead La Salle to the NCAA Sweet 16 and a 24-10 record as a junior in 2013…Starter on La Salle's NIT team in 2012…All-time program leader in games played with 132…Third all-time at La Salle in steals (227) and fourth with 500 assists…14th all-time in scoring at La Salle with 1,729 points.
Fran O'Hanlon (1967-70)
Served as a co-captain for head coach Jack Kraft as a senior in 1969-70 when the Wildcats advanced to the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight … Villanova was 62-21 in O'Hanlon's three varsity seasons (.745), reaching the postseason each time (two NCAA Tournament appearances, one NIT) … As a point guard, he was the consummate creator whose feeds often led to baskets by Howard Porter (the NCAA did not begin recognizing assists as an official statistic until 1970-71) … Averaged 13.1 points per game as a senior with a high of 22 points against Niagara (led by Calvin Murphy) … Played in 82 games over three seasons in the Blue and White with an 8.4 points per game average.
