Lacrosse Finishes Season with Loss to Vanderbilt

4.29.23 | Women's Lacrosse

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Temple lacrosse (7-9, 2-4 AAC) fell to Vanderbilt (4-12, 2-4 AAC) on Saturday afternoon in Nashville, Tenn., in their final conference test of the year. Despite facing an early deficit, the Owls battled it out, tying the game up with a minute left, but a Vanderbilt goal with 21 seconds remaining proved to be the game-winner.

Recapping the Game
  • The Owls opened scoring for the day on a Katie Flynn goal off a Mia Ciancio assist.
  • Vanderbilt quickly answered back, going on a four-goal run to take the early lead.
  • With just 15 seconds remaining in the quarter, Mackenzie Roth made a run through the eight meter, rocketing a shot into the back of the net to cut the lead to 4-2.
  • Julie Schickling continued the scoring for the Cherry and White, finding the first goal of the second quarter, but the Commodores found back-to-back goals just moments later.
  • With just under a minute left to play, Camryn Zavacky came up with the groundball after an unsettled situation in the eight meter, finding herself on the doorstep for a quick bouncing finish to enter the half at the 7-4 disadvantage.
  • Maeve Tobin opened the second half with a goal of her own, but the Commodores answered back just moments later with a two-goal run.
  • Roth created an opportunity for herself, finding a dodging lane and converting to bring the score to 9-6.
  • Zavacky continued to push forward for the Cherry and White, finding a goal on a free position opportunity to end the third quarter only down by two.
  • The Commodores opened the fourth quarter with two goals, but Tobin found a goal of her own with seven minutes remaining to bring the game within three.
  • Belle Mastropietro found her first of the day off a Zavacky assist, in which she drew the foul on the play to give the Owls the player-up opportunity following the goal.
  • A Temple yellow card shortly after resulted in an even six vs. six matchup.
  • Mastropietro came through again for the Owls, finding the back of the net to bring the game within one with just under two minutes to play.
  • Just seconds later, Temple won the draw and Tobin capitalized with a goal to tie the game up at 11.
  • With 21 seconds remaining, Vanderbilt found game-winner, which didn't allow the Owls enough time to make one more offensive run, ending the day with the 12-11 loss.
