Volleyball Opens 2023 Season With Sweep of Iona

PHILADELPHIA - Temple women's volleyball started out its season with an impressive 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-16) victory in McGonigle Hall on Friday against the Iona Gaels to kick-off the 2023 Hilton Philadelphia Cherry and White ChallengeÂ

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Owls hit .316 in the win as senior outside hitter Taylor Davenport was the only player in the match to record double-digit kills as she tallied a match-high 18 kills, while hitting .459.
- Graduate transfers Avery Luoma and Jelena Prolic assisted with six kills a piece.
- Defensively, the Cherry and White recorded eight blocks in the match, holding Iona to a .054 hitting percentage. Individually, Davenport and second-year player Samantha Jo Mikosky led the team with three blocks a piece.
- The Owls hit an outstanding .400 in the first set with starting setter Patrycja Zielinska spreading the ball around to her hitters. TU saw five players with two or more kills in the first frame with hitting percentages over .285.
- Davenport earned five kills on 14 total attempts. Graduate transfer Avery Luoma recorded four kills, while junior Chelci Banks totaled three.
- The Columbia, S.C. native Davenport continued her dominance on the offensive side racking up a set-high seven kills in the second set.
- No other Owl totaled more than one kill in the set.
- Temple's block hindered Iona's offense in the second set, holding the Gaels to a .030 hitting percentage. Zielinska, Mikosky, Banks, and Luoma recorded a block assist in the frame.
- Service aces reigned down on the Gaels in the final set. Davenport earned two, while Luoma helped the Owls gain a stronghold on the set with two straight aces, eventually giving her team the momentum and a 15-9 advantage going into the media time out.Â
- Davenport added six more kills, while hitting over .450 for the third straight stanza. On 11 total attempts in the set, Davenport had a clean sheet with no attack errors.
