Women's Volleyball Remains Undefeated After Sweep of LIU

PHILADELPHIA - Temple women's volleyball team remained undefeated on Saturday night after a sweep of the Long Island Sharks, 25-23, 25-11, 25-18, during the 2023 Hilton Philadelphia Penn's Landing Cherry & White Challenge. Senior outside hitter Taylor Davenport led the Owls with her first double-double of the season, recording 20 kills and 10 digs.
 
For the first time since 2019, Temple has started 2-0 with a pair of sweeps.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Owls' setter Patrycja Zielinska guided her team offensively with a match-high 35 assists and 11 digs.
  • Along with Davenport and Zielinska , graduate transfer Avery Luoma picked up 11 digs on the night.
  • As a team, TU hit .246, while LIU was held to .070.
 
SET 1  (TU 25, LIU 23)
  • With LIU leading 23-19 in the latter stages of the first set, TU scored five unanswered points to earn the set win.
  • Temple and LIU came out of the gate struggling offensively, but it was the Owls earning the advantage with a .125 hitting percentage compared to the Sharks .079.
  • Luoma and Davenport had a set-high five kills to lead the home team.
 
SET 2 (TU 25, LIU 11)
  • The Columbia, S.C. native Davenport ascended in the second set as she led all players with 10 kills, while tallying one error on 15 total attempts.
  • The Cherry and White earned the set two victory by going on four runs of three points or more. Zielinska finished the set by dishing out a pair of kills to Davenport and one to Luoma.
  • Temple held the Sharks to a -.024 hitting percentage in the second frame with the help of 28 total digs. Three players including, Falanika Danielson (6), Nalani McBride (6), and Zielinska (5) added five digs or more in the set.
 
SET 3 (TU 25, LIU 18)
  • Junior middle blocker Chelci Banks added three of her career-high seven kills in the third stanza, while McBride tallied two of her career-high three service aces in the decisive set.
  • Davenport closed out her night with five kills.
