9.13.23 | Women's Lacrosse
PHILADELPHIA- On Tuesday, Temple Women's Lacrosse head coach Bonnie Rosen announced the hiring of Catherine Rainone as a new assistant coach.
For the past two years, Rainone has been an assistant coach at Oregon, working primarily with the Ducks' defense. Rainone helped the Oregon back line to their lowest goals against average (12.72) in five years. In 2022, the Ducks also forced the most turnovers in a season (112) since 2017.
"I'm very grateful to be joining Coach Rosen and the Temple lacrosse family," Rainone said. "To have an opportunity to work alongside a coach with as much success as Coach Rosen is very exciting. I look forward to continuing to move the program forward, becoming a part of the wonderful community and elevating our student-athlete experience!"
In Rainone's first season with the Ducks, Oregon ranked 16th in the country with 18.69 ground balls per game.
The Newtown, PA native is familiar with the Philadelphia area. The new assistant spent three seasons as the goalkeepers' coach and defensive coordinator at La Salle following a successful playing career at Penn State.
Rainone helped develop La Salle goalkeeper Molly Loughlin during her first year as an assistant coach. Laughlin posted a school-record 170 saves during the 2019 season. Meanwhile, the Explorers maintained a goals against average of 11.93 during the shortened 2020 season.
Prior to her coaching career, Rainone was a standout goalkeeper at Penn State, starting as a senior and guiding the Nittany Lions to the NCAA semifinals and their highest win total in 28 years. Rainone was named Big 10 Defensive Player of the Week honors twice and was named to the Big 10 All-Academic Team two times during her career. Rainone also spent time as a strength and conditioning coach while at Penn State.
Rainone graduated from Penn State with a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology with a focus in human movement in 2017.
