Taylor Davenport leads Temple with 15 kills; Owls improve to 6-1

TOWSON, Md. – The Temple volleyball team got back into the win column on Sunday with a sweep over the Morgan State Bears to close out the Towson/Morgan State Tournament. The Cherry and White improves to 6-1 on the season with the 25-18, 25-15, 25-9 victory as it was led by senior Taylor Davenport with a match-high 15 kills.
 
Morgan State falls to 2-5 on the season.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Along with Davenport's 15 kills, graduate transfer Avery Luoma was the only other Owls' player with double-digit kills. The Scottsdale, Ariz. native had 10 kills while hitting .348.
  • Temple never trailed at any point over the final two sets.
  • Sophomore Samantha Jo Mikosky had a match-high six blocks, four solo and two block assists.
 
Set 1 (TU 25, MSU 18)
  • Temple forced the Bears to a -.160 hitting percentage in the first set as it got a pair of blocks from sophomore Samantha Jo Mikosky and one from graduate transfer Avery Luoma.
  • Luoma (4) and junior Chelci Banks (3) combined for seven kills in the first set, while Banks led the team with a .750 hitting percentage for any player with more than one total attack.
  • With Morgan State down 14-8, the Bears went on a 6-2 run. An ace by Ainara Fernandes and a kill by Erin Carpenter helped cut the Owls' lead down to two points, 16-14, but it wasn't enough as the Cherry and White closed out the set on a 9-4 run.
 
Set 2 (TU 25, MSU 15)
  • Davenport had five kills on 11 total attacks, and one error for a .364 hitting percentage.
  • Luoma and Mikosky picked it up offensively with both Owls hitting at an efficient rate. In the set, Luoma had three kills on six total attacks for a .500 hitting percentage, while Mikosky had four kills on seven total attacks for a .571 hitting percentage.
  • Jelena Prolic got the ball rolling for Temple in set two with back-to-back aces, which led to a 11-5 start, forcing Morgan State into a timeout. During that span, the Columbia, S.C. native Davenport had three of  her five kills.
  • Temple never trailed in the set and was capped off by Patrycja Zielinska on the service line for five straight TU points. Additionally during that same rally, Davenport earned her last two kills of the set.
     
Set 3 (TU 25, MSU 9)
  • The senior Davenport dazzled everyone in the gym with seven kills on 10 total attacks, good for a .700 hitting percentage.
  • Luoma and Mikosky showed out in the final set with Luoma totaling three kills, while Mikosky matched her with three. Each player hit over .500 in the set, helping Temple to the match win.
