9.5.23 | General
PHILADELPHIA - Three Community Heroes were recognized during the Temple football season opener as part of Community Appreciation Day, with Jeannette Bavwidinsi, Sheila Hess, and Valencia Peterson all being honored.
Bavwidinsi is a dedicated advocate for Philadelphia's youth, currently serving as the Director of the Mayor's Office of Youth Engagement. Â She has led initiatives like the Summer of Service Initiative, bridging young people with opportunities for meaningful engagement. Â Her mission is to empower youth, encourage civic participation, and drive lasting impact by involving young people in decision-making processes, a vision she tirelessly works to bring to life.
Hess, the dedicated City Representative of Philadelphia since 2016, stands as a remarkable advocate for her beloved city. Â Overcoming challenges posed by being born with Spina Bifida, she has consistently displayed her unyielding spirit. Â Beyond her official role, she has been a staunch champion of various causes, contributing her time and efforts to organizations like Variety The Children's Charity and Fred's Footsteps, both benefitting children in need. Â Through her commitment to positivity and community involvement, she is a true embodiment of the spirit of Philadelphia.
Peterson, Founder & CEO of Open Door Abuse Awareness and Prevention, has emerged as a beacon of resilience and compassion in the face of personal tragedy. Â Having experienced her mother's tragic death due to domestic violence and her sister's subsequent struggle with addiction, she found her calling in preventing such violence through love and intervention. Â Under the alias "Coach V," she runs a summer camp in Chester County where young men find a safe space to address their aggression and challenges. Â Her grassroots effort earned her the nickname "one of Philly's best-kept secrets."Â
