PHILADELPHIA - The 1A FAR (Faculty Athletics Representative) Board announced the recipients of the 2023 1A FAR Academic Excellence Award. This award recognizes outstanding student-athletes for their significant accomplishments in the classroom while competing at the highest level of college sports.
Â
Temple had 11 student-athletes earn the distinguished honor. Included on that list were:
Meghan Arters (Women's Rowing), Sydney Beck (Women's Field Hockey), Kyla Burns (Women's Soccer), Margherita Calderaro (Women's Fencing), Mike Eijgendaal (Men's Soccer), Megan Phillips (Women's Field Hockey), Aine Playdon (Women's Rowing), Ryan Sayers (Men's Basketball), Tannekee Strachan (Women's Track), Allie Summerville (Women's Rowing), Zoe Zaharakis (Women's Soccer).
Â
"We are so proud of all of our student-athletes here at Temple but this group has been outstanding," said Dr. Elizabeth Taylor, Temple University's FAR. "Each one has set a high standard whether performing in the classroom or in athletic competition."
Â
The Award is given annually to student-athletes who graduate with a cumulative GPA of 3.80 or above and have participated in at least two years of NCAA intercollegiate athletics at a Football Bowl Subdivision institution.
Â
The announcement of the 2023 1A FAR Academic Excellence Awards come just one week after Temple announced that 450-plus student-athletes combined for a 3.37 semester grade point average – an increase from both the fall and spring semesters from the 2022-23 academic year. The 2023 Fall marked the 24th straight semester that the grade point average was above a 3.0, with just shy of 80% of student-athletes earning above a 3.0 GPA. Eighteen out of Temple's 19 athletic programs earned a higher GPA than in the 2022 Fall.
