Davenport Shines in Final Match as Owl; Volleyball Earns 3-1 Win Over Charlotte in Season Finale

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Temple volleyball senior Taylor Davenport recorded 29 kills in her final match as an Owl, helping her team to a 3-1 (27-25, 17-25, 25-21, 26-24) win over Charlotte on Sunday. The Cherry and White close the season tied for eighth in the American standings but missed out on the AAC Tournament due to the tiebreaker policy.

SET 1 (TEM 27, CLT 25)

The Owls opened the scoring in the match after an attack error by the 49ers' Jessica Ricks.
Charlotte held its largest lead at 13-9, before TU rallied to a 5-2 run to keep things close going into the media timeout.
The 49ers came out of the media timeout swinging with a 2-0 scoring run, forcing a Temple timeout.
The Cherry and White responded with their own 3-0 run to tie the match 17-17, forcing Charlotte to take their own timeout.
Temple earned the first set point after a service ace from Nalani McBride.
After a quick exchange of set points, the Owls took the first set in the same way it started, with an attack error by Ricks.

SET 2 (CLT 25, TEM 17)

The teams started the second set with a series of point exchanges until 3-3, where the 49ers broke away with a 6-0 run.
The run was finally ended from a kill by freshman Christiana Greene, assisted by Lexi Yoza.
The Cherry and White were not able to string together consecutive points through the start of the set, forcing TU to use both of their timeouts early.
After the timeout, kills by Finister and Chelci Banks gave Temple a surge of momentum that resulted in a 3-1 run.
The Owls began to tighten up their defense, but the deficit was too large to overcome, and Charlotte took the second set after a kill by Florencia Wolkowyski.

SET 3 (TEM 25, CLT 21)

Reigning AAC Freshman of the Week Sydney Jones came out of the gate with a service ace to give Temple the first point of the third set.
Yoza orchestrated the TU offense in the set with 14 assists.
Both teams continued to fight for the set with no team having more than a two-point lead until Temple broke away from the 49ers in a 3-0 run to make the score 21-18.
A kill by Greene gave the Owls the final point they needed to take the set and a 2-1 lead.

SET 4 (TEM 26, CLT 24)

The 49ers came into the fourth set with a high level of intensity and began the set with a 5-0 run.
A kill by Jones started a comeback for the Cherry and White, who went on a 4-1 run to pull within two at 12-10.
The Owls found themselves down 16-11 but went on a match-altering 6-0 scoring run to gain the lead for the first time in the set at 17-16.
The fourth set remained nip and tuck and with the score tied 24-24, TU powered through with help from a kill by Yoza to win the match.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

Sophomore Lexi Yoza recorded 50 assists for the second match in a row.
Davenport recorded her second highest kill tally of the season with 29 kills on a .343 hitting percentage (33 at Presbyterian 9/8/2024).
Four Owls recorded 15+ digs, lead by Hikialani Kaohelaulii's 24.
Jones had a double-double with 13 kills and 18 digs, to go along with five aces.
