12.15.24 | Men's Basketball
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - The Temple University men's basketball team put together its best defensive performance of the season, holding Hofstra to 42 points on just 25.0 percent shooting in a 60-42 road victory on Sunday afternoon. The Owls also held an impressive 54-39 advantage in the rebounding battle en route to their second straight win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Hofstra jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead before Temple came right back with a 15-2 spurt to take the lead.
- Sophomore Zion Stanford scored four points and had three assists on a trio of triples to ignite the charge.
- Defense took over from there, with the Owls putting together their strongest half of defense in 2024-25.
- Hofstra shot just 24.1 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes, including a 3-for-18 showing from three-point range.
- Graduate student Jamal Mashburn Jr. began to heat up towards the end of the period, with his jumper on the last possession of the half pushing the advantage to 33-20.
- Five straight points by the home team briefly cut the margin to single digits to start the second half, but the Owls stemmed the tide thanks in large part to Lynn Greer III.
- Playing in his first game as an Owl, Greer III made a steal that led to a tip-in dunk by Steve Settle III and followed that up with a driving basket that re-upped the Temple lead to 38-25 and forced a Hofstra timeout.
- From there, the lead never dropped below 11 as Temple improves to 6-4 on the year.
- Mashburn Jr. scored a team-high 12 points, all in the first half, while sophomore Quante Berry was the only other player to reach double figures with 10.
- The 42 points allowed were the fewest since the Owls held Texas A&M to 42 in a 65-42 win on Nov. 29, 2019 at the Orlando Invitational.
- Temple last allowed less than 42 points on Nov. 14, 2014, when the Owls beat American, 40-37, in the season opener.
- Greer III closed with nine points and five rebounds over 17 minutes of action.
- Of the season-high 54 rebounds, 16 were offensive (also a season best) and led to 12 second-chance points.
- Freshman Babatunde Durodola grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds, the second time this season he has hauled in double-digit boards.
- Temple returns home for a matchup with Davidson (8-2) at Liacouras Center on Wednesday, December 18.
- Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Tickets can be purchased by visiting OwlsTix.com.
