Men's Basketball Rallies for OT win at Wichita State

2.25.24 | Men's Basketball

WICHITA, Kan. – Behind double-doubles from Shane Dezonie and Jordan Riley, the Temple University men's basketball team battled back from a 10-point halftime deficit, rallying for a 72-66 overtime win against Wichita State on Sunday.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Riley had his second career double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
  • Dezonie also had his second career double-double, scoring 14 and pulling down a career-best 11 boards.
  • It is the first time since November 11, 2016 that Temple had two players with double-doubles in the same game when Obi Enechionyia (20 pt, 14 reb) and Ernest Aflakpui (12 pt, 10 reb) accomplished the feat against La Salle.
  • Steve Settle III scored 13 with eight boards. All of his rebounds came after the break. Hysier Miller netted 14.
  • The Owls outrebounded the Shockers 35-22 in the second half and OT. The 52 total caroms are the second most in a game this season for Temple.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In the extra session, Wichita State scored first, but TU stormed back with five in a row. The Shockers pulled back to 68-66, but an offensive rebound and putback by Dezonie, combined with a pair of Miller free throws sealed the win.
  • The Owls worked through a tough shooting start to the game by forcing the Shockers to turn the ball over early as a three-pointer by Settle made it 11-10 Wichita State six minutes into the contest.
  • Trailing 16-12 at the midway mark of the frame, Temple began to find its stroke, connecting on 5-of-6 shots from the floor beginning with a spinning drive by Zion Stanford for a layup and capped by a Settle trey to go up 23-22 at the 7:32 mark. The Shockers responded, using a 11-2 run to go up by eight before taking a 37-27 lead into the break.
  • Temple's defense turned up to start the second half as it forced Wichita State to miss its first seven shots. Methodically, the Owls pulled their way back into the contest as back-to-back baskets by Jahlil White closed the gap to 41-37 with 13:30 to play.
  • Not stopping there, TU continued to clamp down on D and tied the score at 43-43 on a layup by Riley at 10:04. The Shockers started to find some offensive flow, going up 53-47 with 5:50 remaining. The Owls continued to show their fight, using an 11-5 run to knot the score at 58-58 on a Dezonie trey with 2:20 left. After a three put the shockers up with under a minute left, a Riley layup forced overtime.
