Owls Down UTSA to Advance in AAC Tournament

FORT WORTH, Texas – Zion Stanford scored 19 points and Hysier Miller hit what proved to be the game-winning three-pointer with 50 second remaining as the Temple University men's basketball team won its first game in the American Athletic Conference Tournament since 2018 with a 64-61 victory against the UTSA Roadrunners on Wednesday afternoon.

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
- Stanford led the Owls in scoring, adding four rebounds and two blocks.
- Jordan Riley scored 12 and tied Shane Dezonie for the team high in boards with seven.
- Miller filled the stat sheet with 11 points, six rebounds, five assists, a block and a steal.
- Eight different players scored for Temple.
- It was the first conference tournament win for TU since an 82-77 win against Tulane on March 8, 2018.
- The Owls turned the ball over just nine times, its eighth consecutive game with 10 giveaways or less and the sixth time in the span the team has been in single digits.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- It was a strong start for Temple who jumped out to a 13-3 lead at the 13:49 mark, thanks to holding UTSA to 1-for-9 from the floor to begin the contest. Eventually, the Roadrunners started to find their stroke, but the Owls matched them shot-for-shot, opening a 26-16 advantage on a Matteo Picarelli three-pointer with just more than six minutes remaining.
- Temple continued to front run as the half wound down, closing on a 9-5 run, taking a 35-21 lead into the break. Four players had five or more points for the Owls and four had four or more rebounds in the opening 20 minutes.
- The Owls shooting pace slowed into the second half as the Roadrunners worked the lead down to five at the midway mark of the stanza. UTSA eventually ran its string to 13 in a row before a layup by Riley got Temple back in the scoring column.
- TU was pushed to the brink as UTSA tied the game, but never took the lead. Up by three after a pair of Roadrunners' free throws, Miller got the ball on the left wing and drained the trey, to put Temple up 64-58, a lead the Owls held on to through the end of the contest.
