Arnold Ebiketie

Owls in the NFL - Week 1

The 2024 NFL season is officially underway with some Temple alum taking the field on Sunday to help make an impact.

Buffalo Bills left tackle Dion Dawkins (2013-16) created a wall in the trenches that included a huge pancake block on a screen pass that helped wide receiver Khalil Shakir score a touchdown giving the Bills their first lead of the game late in the third quarter. The three-time Pro Bowler helped create a clean pocket for Josh Allen and the rest of the Bills backfield which led to 362 yards of total offense in the Bills 34-28 victory over the Arizona Cardinals.

Two former Owls went head-to-head at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in the week 1 matchup between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Atlanta Falcons. Falcons linebacker Arnold Ebiketie (2017-20) finished Sunday's matchup with five tackles, the second most single game tackles of his three-year NFL career and the most he's had since week 11 of his rookie season.

Steelers Linebacker Tyler Matakevich (2012-15) finished with one tackle in his first game back with the Steelers after playing his last four seasons with fellow Owl, Dawkins, in Buffalo. Matakevich was drafted by the Steelers in 2016 and played in Pittsburgh for the first four seasons of his career.

On September 7, Miami Dolphins wide receiver Robbie Chosen (2012-15) was elevated from the practice squad to the active roster for their week 1 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The news came after rookie wide receiver Malik Washington was ruled out for Sunday's game due to a lingering quad injury. Chosen joined an elite receiving corps led by Tyreek Hill, and Jaylen Waddle who had a combined 239 yards receiving in Sunday's 17-20 win over the Jags.

San Francisco 49ers cornerback Rock Ya-Sin (2015-18) was listed active for Monday Night Football against the New York Jets. Ya-Sin served on special teams and was listed as the backup for All-Pro corner Charvarius Ward. The six-year veteran signed a one-year contract with the defending NFC Champs in August.

Prior to week 1, former Owls Sam Franklin (2016-19), Jordan Magee (2019-23), Jacob Martin (2014-17), and Kenny Yeboah (2016-19) were placed on injury reserve and will not make their season debut at least until week 5.

On September 2, the New England Patriots signed Yvandy Rigby (2019-23) to their practice squad. The linebacker recorded 207 tackles in his five-year career with the Owls. Rigby entered the NFL draft in 2024 and was signed by the Baltimore Ravens as an undrafted free agent. Rigby played in all three preseason games with the Ravens before being released prior to week 1 of the NFL season. The Patriots signed the Turks and Caicos native six days later.
