Second Half Rally Falls Short against Coastal Carolina

9.14.24 | Football

PHILADELPHIA - The Temple Owls (0-3, 0-1) fell to the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (3-0, 0-0) in the Owls' home opener on Saturday afternoon. RB Christian Washington scored two rushing touchdowns for Coastal; who maintained a lead throughout the game despite the Owls narrowing it to a one-possession contest twice. Temple RB Antwain Littleton led Temple with 108 all-purpose yards.

How it Happened
  • Coastal Carolina RB Christian Washington opened the scoring with a 15-yard touchdown run with 4:14 remaining in the first quarter.
  • On the ensuing drive, a deflected pass was intercepted by Coastal DB Xamarion Gordon and returned for a 29-yard touchdown with 3:30 left in the first quarter to make the score 14-0.
  • The Owls got on the board on a Maddux Trujillo 54-yard field goal, which made the score 14-3 with 1:37 to play in the first quarter.
  • After a fumble gave the Chanticleers a short field, QB Ethan Vasko completed an eight yard touchdown pass to WR Cameron Wright extending Coastal's lead to 21-3 with 8:25 to play in the first half.
  • With just under five minutes remaining in the half, Temple cut the lead to 21-10 with a 15-yard touchdown pass from QB Evan Simon to WR John Adams.
  • Temple came out of the halftime locker room strong, first by forcing a quick three-and-out from the Coastal Carolina offense. The Owls then went down the field, capping off a 53-yard drive with a touchdown pass from Simon to WR Dante Wright. This made the score 21-17 Coastal with 10:26 remaining in the third quarter.
  • Coastal responded on the next drive with a touchdown of their own, as Washington found the endzone for his second rushing touchdown of the game. This score pushed the Chanticleers lead back to eleven, 28-17.
  • A 37-yard field goal from Trujillo made the score 28-20 Coastal with 12:58 left in the game.
  • Despite getting the ball back after a turnover on downs, Temple was unable to score an equalizer, giving Coastal Carolina the 28-20 win.

Statistically Speaking
  • LB D.J. Woodbury set a career-high in tackles with 15.
  • RB Antwain Littleton II recorded a career-high 34 receiving yards.
