Temple Athletics has announced Dr. Shemeica N. Binns, MD, as the department's head team physician. Dr. Binns comes to Temple following stints as head team physician at Drexel University and Chestnut Hill College.

"We are excited to add Dr. Binns to the Temple Athletics family," Vice President/Debbie and Stanley Lefkowitz '65 Director of Athletics Arthur Johnson said. "She brings a wealth of experience to our team and, as a former student-athlete, she brings an important perspective to medical coverage for our student-athletes."

Prior to her time at Drexel and Chestnut Hill, Dr. Binns, a board-certified physician who has specialized in sports medicine and family medicine, served a year-long sports medicine fellowship at Rutgers University's Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. During the fellowship, Dr. Binns provided care for athletes at Rutgers, Princeton, and Middlesex College, and was the team physician for Rutgers' football team.

"As a former athlete, I am honored to step into this role as Head Team Physician, bringing a deep understanding of the student athlete's journey," Dr. Binns said. "My passion lies in fostering well-rounded, healthy student-athletes by prioritizing injury prevention and holistic care. I look forward to building a foundation of strength, resilience, and peak performance for the team."

A track and field student-athlete and conference champion while an undergraduate student at Bowdoin College, Binns graduated with a bachelor's degree in psychology with a minor in chemistry.

Dr. Binns continued her education at Tufts University, where she received a master's degree in biomedical science before moving on to medical school at New York Medical College.

Upon graduation from NYMC, Dr. Binns completed her residency at the University of Miami's Jackson Memorial Hospital, specializing in family medicine and completing rotations in pediatrics, orthopedics, urgent care and sports medicine.

In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Binns has served as an assistant professor at Drexel and Temple. She is a member of numerous societies and organizations, including the American College of Sports Medicine Association and the American Medical Women's Association.
