GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina guard Jayshayne Woodard scored the game-winning bucket with 9.9 seconds remaining and a last-second, go-ahead attempt by Temple rimmed in and out as the Owls dropped an 80-79 decision to the Pirates in American Athletic Conference action on Wednesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Pirates started out strong offensively, connecting on four of their first six three-point attempts to take a 20-13 lead with 12 minutes remaining in the first half.
  • A driving layup from Jamal Mashburn Jr. kickstarted an 14-0 spurt over the next 3:41 to give the Owls a 27-20 advantage.
  • Sophomore Zion Stanford had five points during the run while senior Shane Dezonie added four.
  • Temple continued to score at a high clip over the final 10 minutes of the period and entered halftime with a 41-32 lead.
  • Dezonie paced the team with 11 points in the half while Mashburn Jr. and sophomore Quante Berry added nine.
  • In the second half, the Owls briefly pushed their lead to double figures at 50-40 following a hoop from Mashburn Jr.
  • The Pirates clawed their way back behind RJ Felton, who had 19 of his 23 points after intermission.
  • A three-point play by Felton and a driving layup by former Owl Jordan Riley cut the margin to just one at 54-53.
  • The contest was nip and tuck for the remainder, with neither team holding a lead larger than four points.
  • With Temple clinging to a 77-74 lead, two free throws by C.J. Walker brought the Pirates to within one with 2:43 to go.
  • Both teams went cold offensively, not scoring for nearly two minutes before Mashburn Jr. made a pair of free throws with just under a minute on the clock.
  • The two teams traded turnovers before Felton made a layup with 27 seconds left. A missed free throw by the Owls gave the ball back to ECU, leading to Woodard's shot with just under 10 seconds remaining.
  • Stanford nearly came up with the game winner for Temple but his driving bank attempt caromed out with the ensuing rebound going out of bounds off the Owls.
  • ECU threw the ball deep and ran out the clock to seal the win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • The Pirates (9-7, 1-2 AAC), who entered as the third-best rebounding team in the American Athletic Conference, outboarded the Owls, 41-31, including 12 offensive rebounds that led to 14 second-chance points.
  • Felton closed with 23 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Pirates.
  • Mashburn Jr. registered his 10th game this season with 20 or more points, finishing with 22 to lead five Owls in double figures.
