Undermanned Owls Fall Short at UAB

2.23.25 | Men's Basketball

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Missing a pair of starting guards—graduate student Jamal Mashburn Jr. and redshirt sophomore Quante Berry—due to injury, the Temple University men's basketball team could not keep up with the top offense in the American Athletic Conference, falling to UAB 80-64 on Sunday afternoon at Bartow Arena.

The Owls (14-14, 6-9 AAC) head back to Philadelphia to face South Florida on Wednesday. The Blazers (18-9, 11-3 AAC) travel to Wichita State on Thursday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After UAB scored the first five points, Temple used a 9-1 run to grab its first lead of the contest. Both teams continued to connect on shots, with the Blazers hitting a pair of 3-pointers to reclaim a one-point edge at 14-13.
  • A Dillon Battie hoop-and-harm and a Shane Dezonie layup put the Owls back ahead at 22-21.
  • With Temple holding the one-point edge, the Blazers used a 10-3 run to go up by eight.
  • The Owls cut the first-half deficit to five on two occasions late in the period, but UAB closed the half on a 5-2 run to take a 41-32 lead after 20 minutes.
  • Coming out of the break, the Blazers built an 18-point lead at 54-36.
  • The Owls kept fighting, trimming the deficit to as low as 10, but UAB pulled away late for the 80-64 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Zion Stanford led Temple in scoring for the second consecutive game, pouring in 17 points and grabbing a team-high eight rebounds.
  • Joining Stanford in double figures were Steve Settle III (12 pts.) and Shane Dezonie (11 pts.).
  • Aiden Tobiason (4 asst.) and Dezonie (3 asst.) combined for seven of Temple's 10 assists.
  • The Owls were missing starting guards Mashburn Jr. and Berry, who have combined to average 32.7 points per game this season. Both are considered day-to-day.
  • For the first time in AAC play, Temple played in a contest decided by more than nine points.
  • UAB used a balanced offense, featuring five double-digit scorers between 12-15 points.
