Temple Men's Crew Named Finalists for Pair of IRCA End-of-Year Awards

PHILADELPHIA - The recognitions continue to come in for the Temple men's crew team, as the Intercollegiate Rowing Coaches Association announced finalists for the organization's end-of-year awards. Temple is up for two major awards - Comeback Team of the Year and Division I Staff of the Year.
Given to a team that has shown significant improvement with their perseverance, determination and dedication, the Temple men's crew team personified that phrase throughout the 2024-25 season. The top three varsity eight boats were consistently ranked in the top 20 of the IRCA/IRA Top 25 polls all season and put together outstanding performances leading into Dad Vail Regatta.
Facing off against three other ranked opponents in the final, the first varsity eight took home a thrilling win at the finish line to win back the Richard O'Brien - James Hanna Trophy for the first time since 2021. The second varsity eight also earned gold at Dad Vail Regatta, as did the novice eight. The top two varsity boats, along with the third varsity eight, all closed the regular season with Top 20 showings at IRA National Championships - including a 16th-place showing by the second varsity eight.
Nominated by the head coaches and voted on by the membership, this Division I Staff of the Year award recognizes the outstanding work done by the coaching staff from each division in service to their team and in support of the head coach.
In his second season as head coach at his alma mater, Brendan Cunningham and his assistant coaching staff of Dan Goettner, Scott Waters, Bernard Fox and Brandon Van Vuuren have overseen the Owls' rise up the national rankings. In addition to outstanding showings at Dad Vails and IRA National Championships, Temple won the Bergen Cup, Quinn Cup, and registered eight wins at the Schuylkill Invitational during the spring racing season.Â
Winners of the awards will be announced via the IRCA Coaches social media accounts on Friday, June 20.
