Kevin Harvell Named Second Team Empacher/IRCA All-American

PHILADELPHIA - Temple University senior oarsman Kevin Harvell was named to the Empacher/Intercollegiate Rowing Coaches Association All-America Team, it was announced on Thursday.
Harvell, who has sat five seat for the nationally-ranked varsity eight boat all season, earned a spot on the second team. The Massachusetts native helped the Owls to a Dad Vail championship, a top-20 showing at IRA National Championships, and was named the Temple Athletics Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year in April.
In order to be named an All-American, rowers and coxswains must have met the following criteria:
- The student-athlete must meet all eligibility rules defined by their institution
- The student must have raced in their team's varsity boat for the current spring racing season
- The student-athlete must be nominated by their institution
- The head coach of the student athlete's institution must be in good standing with the IRCA
Nominated student-athletes are then selected by the IRCA Board of Directors to First Team, Second Team, or Honorable Mention based on the following criteria:
- Strength of finish of the institution's varsity boat
- Nomination rank within institution
- Coach's comments, individual achievements, and erg score
A total of 104 rowers and coxswains met the criteria to be named All-American, representing 43 teams (37 heavyweight and 6 lightweight).
