Welcome and Overview
The Temple University Student Athlete Academic Advising and Support Center (SAAASC) mission is to assist all student athletes in their development as individuals and as active members of the University community. The SAAASC staff are committed to providing an environment that fosters student athletes' personal, academic, and social growth, and support student athletes by coordinating and providing the resources and opportunities at assist them in achieving their academic goals. The Center assists student athletes in maintaining the daily balance between the demands of collegiate level athletics and academics, and collaborates with campus resources and programs to enhance the overall development and experience for each Temple University student athlete.

SAAASC Services
Academic Advising
4-Year Semester Plan: The SAAASC strongly encourages all student athletes to graduate within four years of their initial enrollment, when possible. To assist students in preparation and academic planning, the SAAASC offers academic advising in conjunction with academic advisors in the respective schools across campus. A four-year semester planning sheet is also available to assist students in their academic planning.
Tutoring
The tutor and study hall programs are an important part of the SAAASC mission. The Center staff encourage and assist student athletes in collaborating and building networks with faculty, teaching assistants, and peers in their courses. Through individualized and group tutoring sessions, student athletes can broaden and enhance their academic experience and ability to succeed. There are three types of tutoring offered to student athletes: drop in sessions, individual sessions, and group sessions. SAAASC also works with the Math Science Resource Center (MSRC), the Writing Center, and other tutor support programs on campus to support the tutoring needs of student athletes.
Study Hall and Tutoring hours are as follows:
Pearson Hall:
Sunday 2-5pm
Monday - Friday 9am-3pm
Monday - Thursday 6-9:30pm
Edberg Olson Football Complex:
During arranged football study hall hours
Workshops
The SAAASC conducts workshops every semester to help student athletes develop the academic skills necessary for them to be successful in the university setting. Topics covered at these workshops include Test Taking Strategies, Exam Preparation, Paper Writing, Time Management, and Self-Care
Intensive Learning Program
The ILP program is run by the SAAASC learning specialists and is set up to provide structured assistance to the most academically at-risk student athletes. As students in the ILP acquire the necessary skills and strategies to build academic confidence, they will become more independent and self-sufficient learners. The goal of the ILP is for these student athletes to move at their own pace to a less structured and supported study program. ILP has several components, including content tutoring, individual instruction, academic achievement assessment, group instruction, class note checking, independent study time, referral for neuropsychological/psycho-educational testing, and assistance navigating the Disability Resources and Services office on campus.
Incoming student athletes are assessed and selected to participate in the program based on a specific set of criteria that includes SAT score, high school GPA, individual academic history and preparation for college-level work. Based on these criteria, an individual learning plan is created for each student athlete in the ILP.
Other Initiatives
Study Abroad
The SAAASC strongly encourages all student athletes to participate in study abroad opportunities when available. Because student athletes have unique seasonal commitments and eligibility constraints, the SAAASC has worked in conjunction with the International Programs Office to identify and promote flexible study abroad opportunities for student athletes.
Freshmen Seminar
The SAAASC acknowledges that freshman year is a time for change and adjustment for all students. Student athletes especially experience significant demands during their first year. To assist student athletes in successful transition to the University, each fall semester the SAAASC offers a series of one-credit freshman seminar courses designed specifically to address the needs of first semester student athletes. Topics include time management, academic resources, sports nutrition, NCAA eligibility education, among others.
CHAMPS programming
The CHAMPS/Life Skills program has been developed to further enhance student-athletes success at Temple University. Temple University makes a commitment to fostering the development of all their student-athletes. Student-athletes are faced with many challenges both on and off the playing field. High expectations face each student-athlete and create demands which challenge his or her athletic, academic and emotional capabilities.
