Temple University Athletics
NCAA Champs/Life Skills
Temple University makes a commitment to fostering the development of all their student-athletes. Student-athletes are faced with many challenges both on and off the playing field. High expectations face each student-athlete and create demands which challenge his or her athletic, academic and emotional capabilities.
With this in mind, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) created a program to assist student-athletes in acquiring the education and experiences necessary for success in virtually every aspect of life. Developed in 1994, the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program has taken root at Temple University and more than 400 other colleges and universities across the country.
CHAMPS/Life Skills consists of five commitment areas:
-
Athletic Excellence
Temple University has a long history of athletic excellence and continue to provide the very best in competition and winning ways. But athletics on the Division I level is also about sportsmanship and about the well being of the student-athlete. -
Academic Excellence
Temple student-athletes understand the importance of successfully balancing academics and athletics. Student-Athlete Academic Advising and Support Center (SAAASC) support student-athletes by coordinating and providing the resources and opportunities for them to develop and refine the skills needed to achieve their personal and academic goals. TU also offers an excellent tutoring program and other information pertaining to post-graduate scholarship opportunities. -
Personal Development
From freshman orientation through graduation, Temple provides programming to help foster a student-athlete's overall development. The reality is that college can sometimes be difficult and the decisions that student-athletes make during these years may affect them for the rest of their life. Our goal is to provide you with the necessary information to make good decisions. Programs ranging from time and stress management to health issues to alcohol/drug prevention workshops to financial planning and leadership training help prepare Temple students to have successful college careers. -
Career Development
The city of Philadelphia provides Temple a great classroom to prepare student-athletes for a career after graduation. Student-athletes are encouraged to participate in Temple's internship program, career fairs and to volunteer to gain any career related experience. In addition, student-athletes will be offered programming on resume writing and choosing career paths. -
Community Service
Temple's student-athletes participate in a number of community service activities. Our biggest community service last year was Partnership Field Day, a community service event for the elementary schools surrounding Temple's main campus. The purpose of the Partnership Field Day is to provide a fun, yet unique, athletic experience for these children from the city of Philadelphia.Other community events the Temple Owls participated in were the BIG 5 clean-up of Fairmount Park, Big Brothers/Big Sisters Program, Lupus Loop 5 K, Toy Drive for Women Against Abuse Shelter and many more team community service events. Student-athletes have compiled countless other hours by visiting schools, hospitals and instructing youngsters at clinics.
The mission of the program is to reach each student-athlete based on his or her individual needs while concentrating on the overall development of a whole, well-rounded person. The program seeks to integrate campus student services, classes and programs with initiatives of the CHAMPS/Life skills Program.
