Academics
The success of Temple’s athletic program weighs largely on the academic progress of each student-athlete. In order to achieve excellence in all areas, Temple’s student-athletes are encouraged to utilize services available through the athletic academic support program.
The office of academic support works to insure that all student-athletes maintain academic eligibility while making progress toward a degree. To this end, study sessions, tutoring and counseling are available to each athlete.
Promoting academic progress is primarily attained through counseling and tutorial assistance, which are staples of what the academic support office offers. All freshmen student-athletes are required to attend study hall, and all student-athletes who fail to achieve a 2.2 grade point average are also required to attend study hall.
Since Temple is concerned with the full personal development of each student-athlete, support duties expand beyond academia. The support office becomes a referral service for many of the University’s resources such as the counseling center, sports psychologists and various programs, workshops and classes.
Temple University’s Office of Academic Support provides an important range of services for its student-athletes. The services fall into five broad categories:
Recruitment
• The Office of Academic Support reviews high school transcripts for coaches relative to Temple’s admissions standards and initial NCAA requirements.
• It coordinates all contact with admissions regarding student-athletes.
• It meets with recruits and parents to explain the academic support program and answer questions about the University, and to discuss NCAA rules and necessary documentation for athletic eligibility and financial aid.
Promoting Academic Progress
• The Office of Academic Support provides tutoring sessions at various times to accommodate student-athlete schedules. Services are provided on either an individual or group basis.
• It coordinates the NCAA Degree Completion Program to help former Temple student-athletes return to complete their degrees.
• It works with Disability Resources and Services to provide appropriate intervention for learning disabled student-athletes.
Monitoring Academic Progress
• The Office of Academic Support maintains files on each student-athlete as well as an extensive database to monitor progress toward a degree and athletic eligibility according to NCAA rules.
• It communicates with coaches on a regular basis regarding academic issues such as eligibility, tutoring session attendance and performance, feedback from instructors and NCAA legislation relating to academics.
Advising
• The Office of Academic Support assists with registration and helps student-athletes coordinate practice and course schedules.
• In conjunction with Career Development, it offers support concerning future careers.
