Field Hockey Alumni

TEMPLE FIELD HOCKEY ALUMNI
"I loved playing for Temple. It was the best experience for me being part of a family and that's what our team was- "a family." If one person was having a bad game, someone else stepped up. We had a lot of fun on our road trips and enjoyed spending time together on and off the field. The main reason we accomplished a lot was because we were not individuals. We were a TEAM. What I loved most about Temple is that you could be yourself and you weren't being judged. GO OWLS. PLAY HARD EVERY GAME."
-Jane Catanzaro-Delaney '90

What was your biggest take-away as a Temple Field Hockey player and what does being a Temple Alumni mean to you now?
When I played for the Owls, the Tyler campus was located a good distance from the main campus in Elkins Park. Being a member of the hockey team made me feel truly connected to Temple University as a whole. To this day I feel a great sense of pride graduating from a world class art school and playing for a Division I field hockey program. It was the best of both worlds for me and I am extremely fortunate.
What did you love most about Temple Field Hockey?
1. Being a part of, and sharing in the collective pride and talents of my amazing teammates under the inspired coaching of the great Anne Volp.
2. As an artist, I loved the magnificent visual of our cherry and white uniforms contrasted against the manicured lush green field at the Germantown Cricket Club on a crisp, cloudless, glorious autumn day.
3. The special privilege of having Tyler's Dean LeClair allow me to park in the faculty lot during hockey season.
4. As art students we indulged in expressing ourselves in some unique way. I did this by proudly wearing my varsity jacket which gave me a unique distinction on the Tyler campus.
What did you love most about Temple?
What I loved most about Temple was the diversity of people and activities that only a large metropolitan campus can offer. This allowed me a world class quality education at (the Tyler campus) coupled with the opportunity to be a part of an exceptional Division I field hockey program. It was the best of both worlds, bar none! GO OWLS!

What was your favorite memory as part of the TUFH program?
As a freshman sitting on the bench expecting to not get a chance to play, Coach Cheeseman called my name and I scored my first goal in a Temple uniform.
What was your biggest take-away as a Temple Field Hockey player and what does being a Temple Alumni mean to you now?
I was a two-sport athlete at Temple and had the opportunity to meet many people and travel to many places. I have since met people and the conversation will somehow include the college experience and I am proud to discuss Temple.
What did you love most about Temple Field Hockey?
I am a competitor and being in the NCAA Final Four would be what I loved most about Temple Field Hockey!
What did you love most about Temple?
I think the education I received and all the interesting people that I met during my four years on campus would be what I loved most about Temple.

"On and off the field I had the support of the coaching staff and teammates; we were a family. Although time has passed and some relationships have changed, I am forever grateful that I experienced college with the people I did. TUFH was a consistent aspect of my life that continually made me happy, was a safe place to express myself and pushed me to become a better person. My time at Temple and playing hockey, without a doubt, helped shape who I am today."

“I experienced the best of everything at Temple. I received an excellent education that served me well for 37 years as a teacher and my field hockey years were very rewarding. I played for a Hall of Fame coach, Eleanor Pepper, who I admired and emulated. My teammates were supportive and driven to succeed against the top field hockey programs in the country at the time. I thoroughly enjoyed my years at Temple and I am proud to be a Temple Owl.”

What was your biggest take-away as a Temple Field Hockey player and what does being a Temple Alumni mean to you now?
My biggest take-away is being able to tell people I competed at the highest level as a Division I student-athlete on a team that I truly loved. I am proud to have not only succeeded academically, but athletically as well. Being a Temple Field Hockey player helped me find my passion in life and has given me direction for a professional future and career, but being an alumni means I have friends for the rest of my life, all over the country, who laughed with me at my best, and helped me through my worst. --And I'll always have people to reminisce on some exceptionally strange memories.
What did you love most about Temple Field Hockey?
I loved the family Temple Field Hockey provided. I had many friends who also played Division I athletics, but our team's family was like no other, and I know that from having gone to my friends' games. I loved tailgating after the games and getting to know my teammates' families and friends. It was amazing to see our team's families travel all over the country to support us... and I also loved the Halloween practices because my class won every year.
What did you love most about Temple?
I loved being a student in the School of Tourism and Hospitality Management. My professors and instructors are incredible people who I still look up to today, and am blessed to have stayed in contact with. Through Sport Management, I learned how sports can be used as a vehicle to change someone's life, and I am grateful for the experience I had in my undergraduate career to set me up for my career now.
What was your favorite memory as part of the TUFH program?
My favorite memory as part of the TUFH program was my senior year, from preseason up until our conference tournament (minus breaking my nose and having surgery). Preseason we did a photo scavenger hunt which was awesome and so much fun - and my team only lost because Bridget's team cheated! We had to do ridiculous activities all over campus (and Philadelphia, really) and take photos doing so. It was a great way to bond with the team on the first day of preseason, and to show the freshmen that we love to have fun. My other favorite memory was on Senior Day. It was a culmination of not only my senior season, but my four years as a member of the team. I am lucky to have gone to college with my best friend and be her teammate, and it was awesome to share our Senior Day together.

What was your favorite memory as part of the TUFH program?
It’s hard to pick a favorite memory, because there are so many fun ones to choose from, but I would have to say that one of my favorite memories of TUFH was staying at the Conwell Inn during preseason. As a team we really bonded there and got to know the newcomers so well during our stay. It gave me a sense of unity with the team knowing that we all went back to the hotel to crash and reboot only to get up and do it all over again a few hours later.
What was your biggest take-away as a Temple Field Hockey player and what does being a Temple Alumni mean to you now?
The biggest thing I took away from being a TUFH player was the idea of teamwork and communication, whether it be on the field, in a classroom or at work, you can't do everything by yourself. In order to get a job done right you need all parts to be working smoothly and cohesively, and being a part of the team helped me to understand the importance of working together.
What did you love most about Temple?
I am super proud to be a Temple Alumni. It means that I received a great education from great teachers, and I was also a part of a community of athletes that all had something in common, working to be the best for our teammates, and to represent the name on the front of our jerseys.
What did you love most about Temple Field Hockey?
The thing I loved most about Temple FH was the great friends I met along the way. My teammates helped me not only to survive preseason, but also the school year as well. Everyone was very supportive and we had a lot of fun along the way.

“We played well and we were friends. We enjoyed all aspects of university life and getting to know about the great city of Philadelphia. Temple was such a friendly place with great academics. I had a sense of loyalty and I’m so grateful for a wonderful all-around education and have such a love of Philadelphia. Your greatest success can come from your contributions in your own backyard."
-Mary Ann Harris ‘61

“I can honestly say that I wish I knew then what I know now. As an alumni I understand what it means to be a Division I Field Hockey player. I understand now that it is not anyone that can be described as such. Temple University is my “house” and the TUFH team is my family. It just keeps growing every year!! I am very blessed!”
-Cherifa (Nouri) Howarth ‘98

What was your favorite memory as part of the TUFH program?
Pre-game for home games. Music in the locker room, getting prepared, motivational chats, the anxiety of getting to the conference room and seeing the line-up, walking out onto the field.
What was your biggest take-away as a Temple Field Hockey player and what does being a Temple Alumni mean to you now?
Biggest take-away: knowing that I have a network of women all over the country that would help me with whatever endeavor I decide to take on. Being a Temple Alumni means that I have a degree to fall back on from one of the most diverse universities in the country. The atmosphere is at Temple is one that you cannot get at anywhere else, and I take pride in that.
What did you love most about Temple Field Hockey?
Really feeling like you are part of something that continues to develop and become greater with every season.
What did you love most about Temple?
Being an athlete and having the support of your fellow athletes.

GIVING BACK
Temple Field Hockey is extremely grateful to some very generous alumni of the program who have continued to stay involved with the Owls in a big way. Ann (McKernan) Robinson  is a 1958 alum who contributed the single largest gift to Temple Athletics in 2007. Robinson and her husband, Armand I., pledged a total of $2 million to Temple including $1.1 million to the field hockey program.

In 2010, Cherifa (Nouri) Howarth (‘98) and her husband, Greg, donated a brand-new state-of-the-art wireless scoreboard for Geasey Field, the site of Temple Field Hockey and Lacrosse. Howarth played field hockey at Temple from 1993-97, and her 33 career goals rank eighth all-time in the history of the program.

“As a proud and passionate alum of Temple University and its outstanding athletics, I am committed to giving back to the program, to Coach Janney and to all of the student-athletes of the field hockey team. I truly have benefited from my experiences that I enjoyed while I?was a student-athlete (Temple Field Hockey 1993-97).  Excellence in education, passion, confidence and lessons on the understanding of stewardship are my core values that are forever cemented in my heart, and I hold a firm foundation of lasting memories.  My Temple University experience has been an integral part of my life and I want to ensure that students of tomorrowhave as great of an experience as I did.”
-Cherifa Nouri - Howarth 98'
