Temple Owl Club

The 9

Wearing a single-digit football jersey is considered to be one of the highest honors an Owl can earn. Each season, these numbers are awarded to the toughest student-athletes on the football team. Now, with a unique program titled “The 9,” a select few supporters of Temple Athletics have an opportunity to get closer to their Owls. The 9 program allows Temple University fans to support Temple Athletics and Temple Football while having the experience of interacting with the football program. For their commitment and generosity at the $50,000+ level, Temple donors will be recognized in The 9 program for their philanthropic impact on the academic and athletic experiences of our student-athletes.

"This program is made for the 'Best of the Best' of Temple Owl fans," said Temple University Deputy Director of Athletics Craig Angelos. "As our single-digit numbers are earned and limited to our top players, this is limited to our top supporters. It is an exclusive club and these nine members will feel special in so many ways."

The monies contributed by The 9 will benefit Temple student-athletes in the following areas:

Academic resources
Career services and programming
Student-athlete nutrition
Access to dedicated mental health services
Enhanced training and conditioning facilities
Recruiting resources
Facility enhancements

As a token of the impactful support this donation provides to Temple University student-athletes, The 9 are provided with several exclusive benefits including a custom jersey with name and assigned number, away-game travel opportunities with the team, and interaction with the Temple Football program. Mitchell & Debra Sonkin

Hall of Fame Level Owl Club Donor

FULL BIOGRAPHY

Mitchell I. Sonkin is currently a Senior Advisor to MBIA, Inc.. Prior to his role as Senior Advisor, he served as Executive Vice President and Chief Portfolio Officer for the company. In his capacity as Chief Portfolio Officer, Mr. Sonkin was responsible for the oversight of MBIA's $778 billion global portfolio of insured municipal, corporate and structured finance credits, including all workout, restructuring, risk and litigation related remediation activities. He was also a member of the Board of MBIA Insurance Corporation and Capital Markets Assurance Corporation. Prior to this position, Mr. Sonkin was Managing Director and Head of the Insured Portfolio Management Division.

Mr. Sonkin was formerly senior partner and co-chair of the Financial Restructuring Department at the Wall Street law firm of Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft and a member of its Management Committee. Before joining MBIA in 2004, Mr. Sonkin was a senior partner at the international law firm, King & Spalding, where he was co-chair of King & Spalding's Financial Restructuring Group and a member of the firm's Policy Committee. He has over 35 years of experience in U.S. and international workouts and restructurings, corporate reorganization and insolvency matters, and has served as a court appointed examiner. Mr. Sonkin has played a significant role in complex structured finance, corporate, municipal, infrastructure, utility, healthcare and insurance company restructurings and served as chief counsel in the rehabilitations of Mutual Benefit Life and Confederation Life Insurance (U.S.).

Mr. Sonkin has lectured and served on panels on such topics as distressed debt trading, utility restructurings and life insurance company reorganizations. Mr. Sonkin is a cum laude graduate of the Temple University College of Liberal Arts where he earned a bachelor's degree in political science and currently on the Board of Visitors and the President's Advisory Council. He received his J.D. from the Syracuse University College of Law where he is a member of the Board of Advisors and its Executive Committee. A member of the Bar of the State of New York, Mr. Sonkin is also admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court. Mr. Sonkin currently serves as the Chairman of the Board of the Rescap Liquidating Trust and is a member of the Audit Committee. Mr. Sonkin previously served as a director of Cascal N.V. from its' IPO (former symbol on NYSE: HOO) through its' acquisition by the Singapore Investment Corporation.
