Temple University Athletics
Single-Digits
In 2009, then head coach Al Golden introduced a method to reward the top players on the team. Those players were awarded single-digit jerseys so that they would be recognized as the toughest players – Temple TUFF. Only those who represent the “T” with pride on the field, in the classroom and in the community, and recognized by their teammates, would wear those jerseys.
For a brief period, Temple got away from the tradition but it was introduced back to the program by Matt Rhule and has been embraced by Geoff Collins and Rod Carey since.
Now, it has become one of college football‘s most honored traditions with several other schools incorporating it into their programs.
The NCAA allowed the use of the #0 jersey beginning in 2020.
* - Due to NCAA restrictions, offensive linemen are only permitted to wear jersey numbers from 50-79.
^ - In 2017, the #1 jersey was awarded to a different player each week.
