John Byford, who has accumulated over a decade of head coaching experience at the collegiate level, was named associate head coach of the Temple University women’s soccer program in June 2016.
Most recently, Byford was a member of the technical staff for Pleasanton Rage Soccer Club in Pleasanton, Calif., where he was responsible for coaching and overseeing various age groups and their coaches.
No stranger to the Philadelphia area, Byford spent six seasons as the head coach of the Villanova women’s soccer program. While at the helm, the Wildcats were three-time BIG EAST tournament participants, as well as earning a NCAA berth in 2009. He was also an assistant coach at Villanova from 1995-96.
Prior to returning to Villanova, Byford spent six seasons at Loyola University Maryland, serving three seasons as an assistant and three years as the head of the Greyhounds program. During his time there, Byford helped the team to four Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championships, as well as two regular season titles and four trips to the NCAA tournament. He was named MAAC Coach of the Year in 2006, when Loyola went 10-7-2 and 8-1 in conference play.
Before joining the staff at Loyola, Byford was the Director of Coaching and Player Development for the Mandeville (La.) Soccer Club. He worked with coaches from the recreational level and travel teams and was responsible for coaching education. He also set curriculums for different age and ability levels of players, wrote articles for the club newsletter and evaluated the players and coaches involved with the club.
An experienced coach who has had success at many different levels of soccer, Byford also has collegiate head coaching experience at both Saint Joseph's University (1999-2000) and Delaware Valley College (1994).
After being named the first head coach at Delaware Valley when the program ascended to a varsity sport, Byford went to Villanova in 1995 and served as an assistant coach for two seasons. The Wildcats won 27 games during that span and posted at least a .500 record in BIG EAST play each season. From Villanova, Byford went on to Kutztown University and was an assistant coach for the men's program.
Byford began his coaching career at Villa Joseph Marie High School in Holland, Pa., where he was the assistant coach of the 1993 state championship team. He also led the Downingtown High School girls' soccer team to the league and district championship and to the state playoffs for the first time in school history in 1998.
A native of London, England, he resides with his wife, Allison, in Audubon, NJ.
